Compression Post. Anyone done it?

I was very careful when searching Vega's to get one without any mast compression sag. It is pretty easy to see right at the top of the bulkhead above the door, and often it is right there although the seller never mentioned it.

I've read a LOT about Vega's. If you plan on serious cruising, you can't discount the recurring them of the mast compression problem. It is hard to find a Vega story where this ISN'T an issue.

I've looked at all of the plans for beefing up the arch, but not a dedicated post.

Has anyone here gone all the way to installing a compression post beneath the mast step? Do you know of anyone who has?

Having installed Steve Birch's reinforcement plate, I would echo the sentiment against a compression post. What would you rest it on? You would have to cut an opening into the floor as it won't support such a post; or you have to rest the post on a wooden beam across the width of the floor (which I did with the car jack I used to temporarily support the beam during installation of the reinforcement - of course with all stays and shrouds completely slack!). Your forepeak would pretty much become inaccessible.

The column of the Vega mast, if extended down to the floor in the interior, lines up with where the hull meets the keel, not on top of the keel.
In this spot the hull is "V"-shaped, and supporting the mast on this area would require a reinforced step that straddled or bridged that "V" so as to prevent downward loads forcing the two sides of the hull apart, somewhat like how a log splitter works ... food for thought.
