Suggesting consulting with the former Hunter designer and builder on this site, albeit they will likely charge you a minor consulting fee. I did once when I had a design question about my Hunter 46.
I think that the composite rudder was actually a composite rudder shaft. I would assume that you could see the shaft construction where the steering mechanism connects. Also, the emergency tiller normally goes into the top of the rudder shaft.
I don't remember the exact timing but when I purchased my 06 33 in the spring of 2006 Hunter had changed back to stainless steel rudder shafts due to some failures. The details are a little fuzzy but I do remember being happy that I didn't have the composite rudder shaft.

Thanks Jake! I imagine that if I look at the top of the post and it is SS then I should be OK. Keeping my fingers crossed here!
Hi, if you remove the cap in the deck where you install the temp rudder you can see if it composite.
I have a 2004 41 AC and you could see the shaft delaminate when turning the helm. Replaced it
about 10 years ago. Price was about 3200. Hardest part of install is lining up the rudder then
drilling a straight hole thru the stainless shaft.
