I think that the composite rudder was actually a composite rudder shaft. I would assume that you could see the shaft construction where the steering mechanism connects. Also, the emergency tiller normally goes into the top of the rudder shaft.
I don't remember the exact timing but when I purchased my 06 33 in the spring of 2006 Hunter had changed back to stainless steel rudder shafts due to some failures. The details are a little fuzzy but I do remember being happy that I didn't have the composite rudder shaft.
