Peg, I use your K.O. on my boat. I flush using the fresh water from a tee off from the sink. My question is: does using any of those water purifiers (tabs or liquid) have any adverse affect on the bacteria action of the K.O.? Jack

It shouldn't...but...

You wouldn't need any of those water purifier tabs if you just recommissioned your fresh water system once or twice a year. However, what do you mean by "a tee off your sink?" 'Cuz there's no way to tee into any of your fresh water plumbing without risk of polluting your potable water supply with e-coli.

Clarification

Sorry, I tee off from the sink drain. I've been putting those tablets in every time I fill the water tank-that's usually about every 10 days or so. Am I being over cautious? (BTW I have your book and I do condition every spring.) Maybe I'm germophobic. Jack

Water Purification

I defer to Peggy on boat holding tanks, but.....many water purification tabs contain a form of chlorine that is used to kill harmfull bugs. All municipal wastewater treatment plants also used to use chlorine to kill bugs in the effluent before discharge to the receiving waters and many still do. The majority of community water supply systems also use chlorine for the same purpose. Sometimes an industrial chemical spill, like chlorine, will get into the sewers and reach a municipal wastewater treatment plant and then the normally healthy aerobic (aerobic means that there's lots of dissolved oxygen in the water to support healthy bug life) treatment process becomes quite upset as the "good" bugs die off in droves. It may even go anaerobic, that's when the smell really starts! So assuming that K.O. is some sort food to promote "good" bug life in the holding tank, then chlorine (in the high dosage) is theoretically likely to be counter-productive to using K.O. Having said all that, unless you are dosing your water with tabs to a level where it tastes totally disgusting, I would be very surprised if there is enough chlorine in your flush water to do any actual harm!

Jack W., I am assuming...

...that you run fresh water from the sink to the drain...which then goes to the head? Is that right? If so I am wondering what Peggie has to say about that arrangement. (Don't take this as being critical Jack, I am just wondering.) (And making sure you don't get the oommmmiiee ggoommmmiieess.) (It's word, it just might not be in Webster's!) Jack Hart

Ideal way to plumb the toilet intake...

'Cuz it's completely safe--no oommmmiiee ggoommmmiieess can get into your fresh water supply--and eliminates a thru-hull/seacock. In fact several boat builders do it that way. And you don't have to flush with water down the sink all the time. You can use sea water (whether you flush with fresh or sea water makes no difference in the holding tank), then close the seaock and fill the sink with clean fresh water to rinse all the sea water out of the system before it can stagnate and stink. However, it's only practical if the sink and toilet are on the same side of the keel.
