Hi fellow Vegaterians, Question, Anyone still have the compass in the
original postion with the view hole in the step up in the companion
way, and do you trust the readings with all the wires and current
flowing around it in that area? Do you have two deviation cards for
when the lights and engine is running and when the curcuits are not
activated? Moved my compass to a bulkhead position when I first
purchased "Remedy" to eliminate this problem but thinking of
returning it to it's original postion and would like to know some of
the problems encountered. Thanks Walt S.

Hi Walt

The compass was here when the ALbin Petrol engine was used as it was quite
small and did not interfere with the compass too much. When Albin started
to install the Volvo MD6A Diesel it was found the interference was quite
considerable, hence the re-siting of the compass to the bulkhead. I hope
this helps in some way. If you have a heavier diesel engine in place of the
Albin petrol 021/022 thenn I think the interference will be too great.
Stick to the bulkhead mounting Walt

I dealt with the adjacent DC current by moving the entire electrical
panel to a new location. See "12 VDC" in the files section. While I
was at it, I upgraded it a bit, retaining one of the Volkswagen fuse
blocks. My engine mass was moved way aft, past the transom, by
installing a 10 hp Yamaha outboard.

I never readjusted the compass because it seems to agree with
magnetic north on my charts reasonably. I have a good sized bubble in
the compass, and no way to refill it, but it works anyway. I will
replace it with a similar new one, in the same location, eventually.
I need to replace the rubber moulding to stop a minor drip.

Hi Doug, Thanks for your input, and Happy New Year to you too! Seems you
moved everything that would interfer with the compass readings. No wires, no
motor in that area. However I have the original gas engine, and the eletrical
panel where it was originally, and do not intend to move them. Ha ha. Thanks

Hi Steve, Thanks for your input about the compass location and recomendation.
I belive most sailors are using GPS, Loran, or a flux gate compass for
navigation and not dead reckoning and magnetic compass for navigation.
Howvever there are times when a magnetic compass is indespencable. Wish you a

I do not think the rubber mouldinbg is a supported item but should not be
too difficult to make.

Or it is an American automotive part available from C.R. Lawrence Co.
(888-421-6144). It must be obtained through a retailer of auto glass
products, as Lawrence is a wholesale distributer.

What I know is that there are digital ones, magnetic ones, I have heard of flux gate compasses (same as digital?).

On the regular magnetic ones, some of them you can see both sides (sort of like a disk floating) and some you can only see the front with the heading.

Are there compasses where you would want to hook them up to your computer? I am thinking that with GPS you would not need additional input from the compass.

Best one I have found for bulkhead mounting and reasonable price is teh
Plastimo Contest 101. Costs about £90 and easy to fit. Lasts and works
well. Available just about all over teh world.

I looked up the Contest 101 compass. It looks very nice.
For the Vega, do you select the vertical bulkhead mount or the 10-25 degree bulkhead mount version?

So your Contest 101 fits right into the hole in the Vega?
I measured the opening at about 4.75 inches in diameter.

I have the Plastimo Steve mentioned and it serves me well. I would strongly recommend not to buy only a digital one but if you need an digital one (for computer input) to install a magnetic one as well. A digital compass won't work when you experience battery problems, a magnetic compass keeps on functioning (exept on the magnetic north pole itself of course).
