My existing pedestal mount compass on my 77 Hunter 30 has yellowed to the point that it is hard to read in virtually all conditions and the glued on illuminator failed prior to when i bought the boat. I have been looking at replacements. Mine measures six inches across has anyone replaced one and if so what was the job like. Help with suggestions for a replacement and measurements would be appreciated as well.

I would suggest that you consider having it rebuilt. I did mine last year and the cost was about 50% of a new one. It now appears to be as new.

The idea of rebuilding is certainly a possibility but given the poor over all condition I am not sure it would be much less expensive than replacement. The dome is heavily yellowed, the metal cover is got some oxidation on it, and finally as I say the illuminator is shot. Not sure but imagine with the number of sailors around these parts must be a local rebuilder, but that will take some checking.

Not sure who made the pedestal doesn't look like the modern product but then this is 34 year old boat so wouldn't expect it to still be in production.

Found some of the RIchie's at about $200 at emarine that would seem to fit, Steve what did you pay for your rebuild.

My compass was a Ritchie Navigator. I think the rebuild was $135. I really depends on the model, but you can probably send yours off and get a quote and evaluation before you decide.

I was really suprised about the outcome. They replaced the lens and interal parts.

I had mine done in California by a fellow that does this on a part time basis. He is an authorized repair center. Nor-cal compass

I replaced my crazed (could not read it) pedestal compass with a plastic cover on my previous 1987 Hunter 31 with a new glass covered Richie compass from West Marine for ~$125. Replacement was easy, albeit I did need to drill a couple of new holes to mount the compass.

The last time I replaced Midnight Sun's compass I did so with one that has a white card with black markings. The night light is green instead of red. It is MUCH easier to read at night, and the green light preserves night vision just like red does.
