compass oil

My 4 1/2" compass has lost its fluid ..... I tried replacing it with generic mineral oil but now the compass card will not move ....Looking for suggestions ....I have heard of baby oil...diesel fuel ...charcoal lighter fluid ...you name it. Feels like the mineral oil is just to thick....maybe its new compass time ??? Thanks Ralf
