Compass Mounting

I recently purchased my new Ritchie BN-202 bulkhead mounted Compass. One of the primary reasons was that I have seen other Hunter 26 and 260's with a similar compass mounted on the port bulkhead. The instructions for installation mention the need for a fairing block if the compass does not sit vertical when mounted. However, at no time have I seen a block used on another boat. How sensitive is a bulkhead compass when installed on a 26 or 260 and what is the best way to correct deviation. Reading the forum archives, and online documentation, some say to remove the compensation magnets if not on a true vertical plane, how would you correct with no magnets? Any tricks or tips on compass installation and wiring sure would come in handy. TIA for all the help. J. R. Setser

No expert, but…

I mounted a compass on the port bulkhead of my H26 without a fairing block. The compass’s inner dial plate (for the lack of better terminology) will tilt both side to side and fore and aft. The side to side tilt actually had markings for degrees of heal. I would think as long as your compass allows some forward tip, and it still swings when rotated, it shouldn’t be a problem. If the dial binds when tipped forward, then you will have a problem. As far as correcting deviation - that all has to do with the surrounding materials present (like speaker magnets). I didn’t have to do any correction. The reason I didn’t use a block is it creates two points of water entry instead of one. Also more wood maintenance.

I agree with MABell

Check the compass before you mount it and if it binds, get some other model. The Plastimo Mini-Contest works very well on an inclined bulkhead and they have them in the BoatUS store in Altamonte Springs. To correct deviation without compensator magnets, make a deviation table. The procedure is described in most marine reference including Chapmans. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Thanks, The question is the angle

The angle of the BN-202 is to be vertical when installed on the bulkhead. The other compasses that I have seen appear to work correctly; I'm just wondering how they are angled. It may be a moot point, but I would love to hear from someone who has done this installation before I cut a 5 3/4" hole in the bulkhead. Also, how hard was it to run the backlight wiring to the panel? Yes I am brand new to the sport; I always believe it's better to ask than recreate the wheel. Thanks again,
