The light for the compass I recall is off of the NAV breaker. When I first got my boat the light did not work. So in fixing it and noting that someone had tried to fix it, I checked it out. One thing to note is there were labels warned to observe the polarity. So like a good nuke I followed them and it did not work, but I could read voltage with a meter. I assumed the bulb was bad and went to WM for a replacement; tested it and then assuming it was bad reversed the leads and it lit up. So I just took it back to the boat and wired it up that way. Not sure what the labels are for. Lesson learned - don't think too hard.
