All, I pulled the pedistal cover off for the first time this spring only to find my Richie compass bone dry!! What a shock. It was fine when I covered it in the fall. I removed the compass to and it looks fine except for the lack of liquid inside. No visable cracks or stains to designate a leak point. Any idea what could have happened and approx what it might cost to repair rather than spend ~$410 on an exact replacement? Thanks, Mike Elmore Windward Hull Catalina 28 - Hull #7

dry compass

I had the same problem last year except I had a crack in the dome. The rubber bellows under the compass had developed a leak and all of the oil drained out. I sent in the compass to the factory, (Richie) and had new bellows, plastic dome, and oil replaced. Seemed to me the bill was under 80 bucks. Not bad for a like new compass. No problems since.

Wonderful

Keith, That about the best answer I could have gotten at this point! I have an as of yet unreturned call into Great Lakes Compass here in the area, but I'll give Ritchie a call today. Do you remember about how long it took to get the compass back? Mike Elmore Windward Hull Catalina 28 - Hull #7

Mike, I looked up the bill and it came to $86 for the complete rebuild of my compass. It seemed that it only took 3 weeks from when I sent it off to when it came back. Hope this helps.
