I finally trashed the broken, water damaged, wooden hatch screen and made one that the screen can be replaced in minutes. With my crew, that is often

I made a drop-in companionway screen frame using some thin plywood with bracing, and a plywood frame that drops into the open hatch opening and "mates" with the companionway screen. It took a couple tries to optimize the fit, but the result has proven mosquito-proof.Recess, I built the same unit as flynfol except that I extended the screen above the top edge of the frame, added velcro to the perimeter edges of the extension and to the companionway opening, so that it would be sealed with the main hatch open or closed.
The piece of the bimini that connects the bimini to the dodger and just fold it over a line run between the winches. Eash access. In the winter I may get clear plastic to allow the heat in.I have a flap that covers our companionway and I would like to add another layer to it that is a screen. I like being able to flip up the flap and get in and out easily. I thought of adding a rigid screen but thought taking it out and putting it back in may be too much of a hassle.
the flap I have now has sand bags at the bottom to keep it sealed. It has snaps attached to the hatch cover, I don't like that because it takes too much to put it on and take it off. When I rebuild it, it will be a wood bar that fits at the top of the companionway at the top of the hatch board slot, that has a screen and cloth flap attached and both weighted at the bottom.
I was leaving the cloth flap on over the hatch boards while I was away from the boat to protect the boards. But it sealed the boat up too much and stopped any airflow over top of the hatch boards and through the slotted vent.
Doors seem the best choice on some boats with a recessed access in the companinoway' but on my boat I haven't thought of a way while out sailing to have them open and be able to use the seats at the front of the cockpit against the bulkhead.
I second this. The bugbusters screens sold here work perfectly and set up quickly. They have little lead weights sewn all the way around, so you can just move them aside to exit the cabin and they fall easily back into place. We use one on our H306 (don't recall the size).http://shop.sailboatowners.com/detail.htm?group=118&cat=2001
I have one for my hatch and one for my companionway and they work great and stow easily in their case.
