I have a 1984 hunter 31. After a decent rain if I slide my companionway hatch open, water just comes in like a waterfall. The lines are led aft and go through a housing on the deck. I am wondering if the problem is in there. Access is very difficult.

Here's the deal!

Pancho: first - where is Bo Bay? This is a common problem on these boats. The way we corrected ours was to have a cover made for the companionway. We also have a dodger. The problem is the channel that the companionway slides on. You should always make sure that the channel is clean and free of any debris. There are holes in the aft end of the channel that should allow it to drain into the cockpit. On the forward end the channel is open so what happens when there is rain? The water collects on the slider and drains into the channel or drain forward and then leaks below. If you ever pull off the seahood (big job) you can plug the channels on the forward end.

Companionway cover leak response

We had a similar problem with our 1985 Hunter 31. After trying numerous topical treatments to stop the leak, we hired out to a professional. The problem was "clogged drainage ports" UNDER the companion way top. Repairs require removal of top (a major job if you do not know some tricks of the trade), clearing clogged ports and tracks and installing drainage tubes to stop a repeat of this problem. Replace top in new bedding, We have had no further leaking since repairs were made, approx. 2 years ago. Approx price for repair by professional, $1700.00.
