hey everyone, has anyone made a companion way screen, I'm looking at some, but the 80$ seems a bit much for a screen
thanks in advance

Yes. I've made two kinds. All netting with velcro on the edges of screen and companionway. and wooden frames which slide into the companionway slots to which netting is glued. I prefer the all netting for compact storage.

I just took some door screen, wide enough to cover the companion way opening, cut to length several inches longer than needed to cover the opening. Then I cut a 1x3" board the width of the companionway, and wrapped the screen around it a few times. Stapled it so it would stay.

Then just "anchor" the top of the screen with the board on top of the slider hatch and drape the screen over the opening. If necessary, put something to,weight it down on the bottom. Cheap, easy to move when you want to go out, and keeps out most of the spiders and mosquitos.

Remember the screen should be fine mesh to repel no-see-ums if you travel in such infested areas. They are all teeth in a pin-head body.

One big advantage of Tallyho,s system and also TS,s drop boards is that they are much quieter than velcro which makes a hell of a racket waking up the admiral during late night sea nettle repellent applications. ;)

I cut out a bit of screen about 4" larger than the hatch and down to the cockpit floor. Then I took a bit of one of our old 3/4" jib sheets and quickly laced it around all the edges. Must have taken all of 20 minutes to make and it's going on 5 years old.
Stays in place but is super easy to go through. Folds up small, too.

I bought a mosquito net at Dunham's sports store for covering outdoor sun shades and it fits over the entire pop top even when open and covers everything including companion way, we woke up last Saturday morning to a mosquito covered net but none inside thankfully because there was hundreds

I have a similar type of net, its one that hangs over a bed. It hangs from the boom, is weighted on the bottom edges and covers the hatch and companion way so I can stand there and survey my suroundings.

I went on sail-rite and saw info on making a canvas companion way cover to block
out the sun and they show how to add in a screen also.
I wanted the cover to keep out the sun here in Florida.
My wifes hates to sew but got her to make it with our home sewing machine and I did the ordering and leg work and she did the sewing and team work.

We tried weights at the bottom and chain sewn into the hem around the edges to hold the netting down. With the netting oversized, it worked ok. But it can still be blown and have gaps. Then we had one made for us (but it is a simple sewing job) that has velcro attaching it on all sides of the companionway and a zipper down the middle for going through it. In the North Channel of Lake Huron, the mosquitoes can be abundant and vicious. What I like about the current set up is that it is positively sealed in all ways when were are inside the boat after the sun sets. Entrance and exit for us is easy with the zipper (which is unzipped in the attached photo and during the day--you can see that the netting is out of the way).

On our F-24 we have a large piece of netting with a sand tube attached to the top to hold it on top of the companionway and I use a couple of pieces of scrap reinforced hose which snaps nicely in the hatch slots on either side to seal it tightly.

Easier to stow in two parts. And since the drops are the same size, I can use a single drop and single screen on cooler nights. Either upper or lower
That is a good point. I have 3 drops, so I'll have to decide to make 3 or 2 making one larger (which I am leaning toward). Up here the nights are cooler except July and August. Sure wish that global warming would kick in.

We have been using a novel screen design for our companionway. It consists of two 1 X 2 pieces of wood with a piece of screen in between. The top piece of wood is sized and notched to fit into and between the drop-board slots at the very top of the companionway and it fits tightly under the aft end of the companionway hatch when it is closed. The bottom piece of wood slips into the slots at the very bottom of the companionway. A piece of flexible screen is tacked between the two wooden supports and is cut wide enough to overlap the sides of the companionway. We usually stuff the extra screen into the side slots to hold it in place or you could use a strip of foam gasket material. A strip of foam gasket makes a good seal at the top of the screen and under the sliding companionway hatch. When not in use, the whole thing rolls up and is easy to store. Of course, you have to close the overhead companionway sliding hatch to seal the opening against bugs.

This is a good winter project since it takes some time and careful cutting to get the top piece to fit tightly across the top of the companionway. I have finished and varnished the wood to match the teak on the boat.

I bought the one sold on TV with the magnets down the middle to easily reclose. Just cut to size and use velcro to attach the perimeter. I think only about 20 bucks. You don't even have to put your beer down to pass through it! Chief
