Is a 6 h.p. outboard too much or too little for a Compac 16?

A six horse is more than needed, and probably puts a little too much weight on the stern.

i have a 27 and have a 6 off the back on a motor mount. it pushes my boat at hmm 5 knots and i also use it on my inflatable. it might be too much weight but works well on the 27's.

cp 16 power

For my cp16 I use a Honda 2hp with long shaft. Ideal for the 16. I also use it occasionally on my cp23, but just for docking when I can't sail into the dock. The 6hp probably weighs too much and will put too much strain on the motor mount and stern.bob

your hull speed is your speed limit, sorry.

I sail a Com Pac 16 with a 3 H.P. Honda. I believe the boats hull speed is about 5 knots which is easily achieved under the Honda's power. A slightly more powerful engine may be helpful in strong current situations.
