I have combined two lengths of chain for years using the two-part link with pins that are peened for fastening. I do recommend using the Crosby brand, American-made links vs the cheaper Chinese link. I have 5/16" G4 chain and I use the 3/8" Crosby link. It goes through my windlass just fine.
