combi prop and shaft adapting to an older M 20 universal Kubota 16 hp diesel

I had another message posted here. I am still looking for advice on whether a combi prop and shaft can adapt to a universal Kubota M 20 16 hp diesel? I know that the volvo prior in the boat , not there when we just bought the boat, was installed without a transmission, and used the combi prop to shift. Now , that mechanism is probably too long on the shaft to fit the engine with its Hurst transmission. Should we set up the motor like th old Volve without the transmission , directly on to the flange of the combi mechanism, or is there another way to make the engine and transmission work with the combi prop and shaft? Or do we take out the shaft and combi prop altogether and use a new shaft, cutlass bearing and prop? That would cost a whole lot more. We are a non profit project outfitting this boat for our program , and the funding is most limited. Any advice? THanks , TIm

Hi Everyone, I have from time to time some water which infiltrates under the starboard banquette and I can't find out where it comes from. Throughhull is healthy and does not leak. Is it possible that the water of bilge makes its way there by strong heeling? Thank you! MarieTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

but you might need a reduction gear? If you get rid of the Combi, let me

know.

Hi. I had this problem and it was caused by a leak in the fresh water pump under the sink. Easy to check - just watch when you pump with your foot. You need to remove the shelf under the sink to access the pumps.
In my case I think the pump was damaged by frost.

I had the same problem for the same reason as John. You could also check the head, the raw water inlet hose to the head, the sink (if you have water running through the drain), the icebox drain (if you're using it), and the possibility of condensation. You might also check the chainplates.

Best of luck!

Hi Marie,

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the fresh water pump,
too. It was leaking continually but very slowly. I eventually
replaced the pump. The problem was compounded by the fact that the
little drain holes that would normally drain this water into the bilge
were plugged. The holes are right next to the battery compartment.
Easy to unplug with a piece of wire once you find them.

Hi I had the same problem some years ago, it can be when you are well heeled over on the port tack and the water outlet is not over the sink water tends to leak from the tap to the working surface and then into the bilge. I used to have a salt water inlet and tap which used to cause this, I have since removed it as the sea water round the Thames estuary is distinctly muddy.

I agree with with the point about clearing the holes to the bilge, they do get blocked and can be quite difficult to locate.

Thank you all for your answers. I will try to find those holes. But I doubt that it can be the pump because I've replaced it 3 years ago and the water never comes at the dock...It is always after sailing that I notice it and it is quite a lot of water because the piece of clothe I leave there now become completly wet...It would be easier to find out if I was saling in salted water!
But my question then is if it is coming frome the bigle when heeling to starboard why is it not the same in the port side when heeling to port??? This comparment never gets wet...To: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

Hi Marie,

The pumps don't prevent water flowing through them (i.e. they have one way
valves). So if the end of the tap is lower than the water level in the tank
(which can happen on port tack on quite modest heel), then the water can
sometimes flow slowly out of the tap. Mostly the tap in the heads, but
sometimes the galley one too. This is certainly what happened to me.
Nowadays the taps are sold with a valve at the spout, and I've changed the
galley tap over (and removed the fresh water pump in the heads).

I think this is the same thing that Mike Freeman mentioned. It would
certainly explain why the water is only on the starboard side, and is a
problem that several other Vega's have had. The problem is the pump and the
blocked drain hole for the locker under the starboard bunk. I ended up
sticking a cable tie into this drain hole and pushing a small hole through.
Once it started to flow, it cleared the rest of the dirt out.
Unfortunately, I only discovered this after the wood in the bunk had got
very damp.

Marie,
my pump only leaked when I pumped it. Maybe you only use the pump when
away from the dock?

So it is easy to check if that is the problem...
