Combi-drive

Hi all,
Just a couple of questions. "Overture" was retrofitted with a ZF, BW6
gearbox in place of the combi-drive using some less than desirable
engineering. The offset between the input and output shafts creates
some problems in aligning the prop shaft. I am trying to find the
best way to move the engine back to its original position, make the
connection to the gearbox and then to the prop shaft. I would like
to find out if the combi-drive has any offset between the input and
output shafts? If anyone has experience in modifying a Vega for a
gearbox, that they are willing to share, it would be appreciated.

My second question is a little simpler (maybe). Does anyone have a
rig-tuning guide for the Vega? Some the shrouds are loose and I would
like to find out how others have adjusted the masts

Many Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul;

that's the way I did it: I made a templet of the (new) engine and
gearbox and then
aligned a string from the outside (center) of the stern bearing to the
engine (gearbox).
It worked; I had to make only some very minor adjustment with the engine
mounting
screws.
Make sure you have a 25 mm shaft if you're using the original stern bearing!

Your second question: Much depends on your sails! Adjust the shrouds to
have the mast
centered (left and right- or board or starboard as sailors say. To
adjust the 'rake' of the
mast, you have to sail the boat. In moderate (10 mph- if you're a modest
sailor), your boat
should want to round up-wind, meaning when you center the tiller and let
go- the the
boat will round-up. If your boat rounds-up too much, rake the mast more
forward.
If the boat falls off the wind (which is dangerous!), adjust the mast
more backwards. Do
the adjustment with the same amount of people on board to get good
results. You may
have to adjust the lower shrouds once you're done with this.
Remember: Your rudder will work as a brake if the 'rake' is not correct!
