I'm replacing the sheets and halyards on my '84 H31. As I'm relatively new to sailing, I wonder, is there any generally accepted convention for choosing the colors for the lines? I've looked all over marinas in my area and can't seem to discern any particular pattern. Is this an area for "personal creativity" or are there some generally accepted guidelines out there? Any help would be appreciated.

not really

No real convention that I know of. I have seen red and green lines or r/g tracers used for port/starboard lines, but its up to you.

Colors Help ID Lines

Using colors helps to identify lines quickly, but I'm not aware of any accepted convention on what colors to use. Just remember, solid colored lines will be easier to identify than white lines with colored flecks, especially after they get dirty. Tom FitzGibbon S/V Plan B

Sort of

I put the following color coding info in my Palm handheld computer a while back, for reference. I think it came from the Chapman Book of Small Boat Piloting. Main sheet and Halyard: white Jib/genoa: blue Vangs & Travelers: black Spinaker: red & green guys s/v Hydro-Therapy

Match to limne brakes/stoppers?

I think I would match the line color to the handle color on the stoppers
