Coleman water heater

I'm considering buying one of these for my boat. The hose that runs the hot water to my shower has ruptured and the cabin sole where the hose runs under won't come off. I've decided to run new hoses along a different path, perhaps bypassing the engine directly to the shower. We seldom use hot water, but for the occasional hot shower I thought I might look into an alternative source. Any ideas?

That's a camping item

William that's used for outdoors only, I believe. If you can't figure out how to fix it, hire someone who is familiar with boat plumbing. The engine creates alot of heat, it's much easier to run the engine a few minutes for a shower than to set up a whole new system.

I use one

I have a unit similar to the Coleman product. It works well, but it gets to be a hassle setting it up and taking it down all the time. Also, as Sean points out, it IS intended to be used outdoors. Be VERY VERY careful of Carbon Monoxide and other goodies put off by burning propane in an enclosed area. On my Hunter 33 I set it up directly under the port in the head and use a fan to assist in venting the exhaust gasses out of the boat, but still worry. At least you have the option of "engine heat". With my engine set up (raw water cooled) I don't even have the option. My vote would be to repair the old system.

What about for an outboard?

Can you rig some sort of hot water heater with an outboard engine? I don't know how warm the water coming out of the engine is - but thought I would ask.

Run a new Hose

How about if you try connecting a new hose to the old one and pull it thru under the floor if this is possible or a new path for the new hose. I love when a want a shower and just have to start the motor and not go crazy hooking up all kinds of stuff. nick

I tried it

Believe it or not, it works on a limited basis. I had a foot pump cold water shower. I put in a 12 volt pump and inserted the the coleman heater into the system. When i need hot water, i set it up on the sink & it works ok -- I obviously don't take a long shower & it's by an open port, so it works ok. For limited use, it's adequate.

Run the engine for a few minutes?

Sorry, but it takes a helluva lot longer than a "few" minutes to heat a tank of water with the engine. Heat exchangers are not NEARLY as efficient on the mooring/dock as they are with the engine under load. I have a Paloma demand type water heater on my Nonsuch and I get hot water instantly and as much as I want. It's propane fired and works like a champ. Other demand type water heaters are available in a range of sizes. Price is not usually any more than for an exchange water heater. Plus, If you already have a propane or CNG system on your boat it's an even easier installation. Cheers, Bob

Propane does not emit carbon monoxide when burned

Used with care, propane is a safe and convenient fuel. When propane burns it produces carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapour and heat...that's it. If it produced CO, do you honestly think that boat builders and insurance companies would allow propane fired ranges on boats? Do you honestly think that you could comfortably relax in the cabin while baking your breakfast muffins? Additionally, it is not poisonous. It is classified as a flammable gas and an asphyxiant, that is it displaces the oxygen. However, in an environment of propane in a high enough concentration to cause asphyxiation, the asphyxiation factor is secondary to the explosive atmosphere. All fuels are not created equal, nor do they all emit CO. Cheers, Bob

ALL Fuels emit Carbon Monoxide when Burned

Don't be misled - ALL fuels emit carbon monoxide when burned. What you will usually see is the mention of "incomplete combustion", but you are seldom in control of how complete the combustion of a fuel is. Propane can be used safely when proper situations and safety warnings are heeded. Here's a link to the first google page I found with some general purpose safety statements about propane usage. Good (safe) luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

oops...I mispoke

I mispoke, I meant to say Carbon Dioxide, not Monoxide (got 'em confused). However there is a little Carbon Monoxide too I guess. I also didn't mean to sound like I was strongly against the idea. I use my unit all the time. It's just smart to aware of potential problems.

Did anybody else here receive that mailing from

Hunter, warning of the dangers of carbon monoxide from your diesel engine equipped Hunter? Mine arrived a couple of years ago. Every way a boater could be exposed to the encroachment of fumes was in the booklet. Clearly a product of Hunters legal department. No one has ever been poisoned from a diesel engines' carbon monoxide. They don't make enough, if any, to affect humans.

Diesel Exhaust

The gases in diesel exhaust can create health problems. The top eight components are: * nitrous oxide * nitrogen dioxide (NO2*) * formaldehyde * benzene * sulfur dioxide * hydrogen sulfide * carbon dioxide * carbon monoxide (CO*) FWIW: * I'm not exactly certain why, but the Exhaust Gas Monitor/Alarms that we specify for enclosed parking garages only detect CO & NO2.
