I saw that Wal-mart had 12 volt Coleman refridgerator/coolers on sale. I was thinking that this would be a cheap way to add refridgeration to my boat but I am wondering what the draw on the batteries would be. I also considered adding another 12 V battery in another location and using that battery solely for the refridgerator (that would tie me to a dock every few days to charge that battery. I would be scared to run it to my house battery because I am not sure what the drain would be (thought it would be nice because it would charge by the engine). Does anyone have experience with this? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of info in the archives....

I was curious so I looked it up in the archives. There was a lot of infomation about the coleman there, some good, some not. The biggest negative was the coleman appearently runs all the time. One poster stated,"It killed my deep cell battery in 12 hours!". Others said it was great at dockside with the ac plugged in. I guess it all depends on how you are going to use it. Good luck, Jack

i have one

I just got back from a 2 week trip- i used my igloo thermo electric cooler and it worked great- i was plugged into the dock each night- and ran it off the battery while motoring during the day- 2 drawbacks- i had to turn it off periodically to keep it from freezing items i didn't want frozen (it was pretty cool in the evenings and at night, and it uses about 5 amps while connected to the battery. when i bought it i added another house battery so i wouldn't run down the starting battery.

Where is the spare battery

I have thought about adding a spare battery to my boat but I don't know where I'd put a spare house battery. I am also no sure how to hook it up to the alternator so that it will charge when the engine is on. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated

spare house battery

i put the extra battery under the port side bunk- i built a litle shelf for it, i added an extra battery switch- 1-2-all, on the primary switch 1= the starting battery; 2= the house batterys either 1, 2 or all on the secondary switch. if i had to i could use all 3 batteries; primary switch= all and secondary switch= all.
