Newbie question. I started my '82 27 for the first time today. The cold water thru-hull only discharged a short blast of water once every 10-15 seconds even after letting the engine run for an hour with the temp gauge in the normal range. Is this ok? Thanks.

Yes it is fine

That is how they work. The water goes into the mixing bowl and they gets pushed out with the exhaust.

water discharge

This a good guestion and is area that I always look at and check before leaving the dock. Much of the info you need depends on the motor. I had a 5411 raw water cooled that did not discharge nmuch at all,the new westerbeek is all together different. The other thing is to watch the temperature. Also check the other end if water can not get in to the cooling system it is not going to come out, this will cost you big bucks if you fry it (believe me)

Interval seems a little long to me

I think that a 10 - 15 sec interval is a bit long. Seems to me it is more like 3 or 4 second intervals though I have never timed it. I would try the engine underlaod - in gear pushing water - and see what the temp guage does. Perhaps your interval just seems long becasue you are expecting a steady stream - a watched pot type of thing.

Might replace the impeller...

You might replace the impeller just for good measure. If the boat is new to you, it might be a good "piece of mind" kind of thing. But as long as there is water coming out and the temp doesn't go nuts, it should be ok. B

Sound ok

By cold water discharge, I am assuming you mean the exhaust pipe. This is a boat specific sort of thing. Depends on the actual level that the muffler is at in relation to the water line and any interveining hoses, how the boat is loaded and how fast the engine is running. With that said, 10-15 seconds at idle is on the long side but as long as water is comming out every 10-15 sec then you have cooling water flowing. You should be OK but watch it while under load to get a feel for it. Then when something changes you can catch it quickly.
