Cold Steering Wheel

Up here in Canada its a relatively short sailing season. In the spring and in the fall you have to sail in some pretty chilly conditions. I'm not a glove guy and I find that the wheel on my boat can get pretty cold at times. Heck, even in July it can cool off pretty quick. I have been looking at some ways to take the chill off and most of the popular methods are a little pricey.

I decided to try this Plasti Dip product that many car enthusiasts use. It is a rubbery product that comes in a spray can which you apply just like spray paint. Usually this is applied to tools as a rubbery grip on handles. Here are a couple of pics from application to finished product. The key is light coats and allowing proper dry time between coats. I used one full can at a coat of $20 and there are numerous colors to choose from.

We'll see if it works. So far I like the feel. If I don't like it, I'll just peel it off. I would say it is about 1/16" thick.

RE Cold Steering wheel

a cheap and slightly more salty solution is the french knot wrap. Took about 4 sections of 50' cord (and 3 6 packs) to do my wheel. Look close and you can see the "night knots" at 3 degrees port and starboard and rudder amidships.
