I have just completed installation of an Adler Barbour Cold Machine, and would like to share my experience. First, thanks to Bill Thomas for his quick response to a question I had about the Cold Machine. This installation is a piece of cake. The toughest part of it was running the copper tubing through holes in the bulkhead and routing them to the compressor. I was afraid of kinking them, but things worked out ok. Make sure you have an assistant during this phase of the installation. The rest of it was very straightforward, and the instructions supplied with the kit were very detailed and easy to follow. I have just completed what I call the "Worry Week". If something has been in a week, and I don't worry about it any more, then it is ok. I have only two minor criticisms of the Cold Machine as supplied. I got one with a horizontal freezer because that is what works best in my Catalina 36 for the space available. The freezer door only opens "up". Why not have pre drilled holes both top and bottom, and affix the door with screws instead of pop rivets. That way, an owner could select the door opening that best suits the installation. My second comment concerns the special "filler" used to seal around the tubing where it exits the icebox. The holes in my icebox from the previous unit are on a horizontal surface. The filler/sealer provided is "putty-like" and things will eventually stick to it. If it were a silicon type that dried to a slick surface, then spilled food wouldn't stick to it. Now that it is in and running, I find that it will chill the box on my Catalina 36 to 40 degrees on the top shelf farthest from the freezer, and about 35-37 degrees in the lower parts of the (top loading) icebox. All this with a thermostat setting of between 5 and 6. Keep in mind that I live aboard and have my icebox packed pretty full. I full box that will maintain temp with less compressor cylcling than will an empty or mostly empty box. Keep lots of beer in it, and if you use your boat often during a season, like every week or two, leave it running. It is easier to maintain temp than to bring a hot icebox down to useable temp. All in all, I can highly recommend the Adler Barbour. A couple of my friends have them, and swear by them. Add one more to the loyal customer base.
