The fifteen year old refrigeration unit on my boat is breathing it's last. I have heard only good things things about Adler Barbour and will probably buy one. I do want to know, however, if the horizontal unit has a door on the freezer. I called West Marine, and their order taker had no idea. Anybody out there have the answer?

Freezer door

We have a Grunert refrigeration unit on Endless Summer and we had to use th horizontal evaporator (freezer). The vertical one would have blocked the access to the rest of the refrigerator access and I hate those vertical ice cube trays. We have a door on our horizontal unit. The Adled Barbour door is the same as the Grunert door, except the Adler Barbour door is a little more heavy duty. We have an Adler Barbour door on our Grunert freezer. They probably all use the same evaporator. If the Adler Barbour horizontal evaporator does not come wiht a door (and I doubt that) I am sure you can order one. (Is there an adlerbarbour.com? I have seen a link to an adler barbour guy on HOW.) The door has a hinge that is fastened to the evaporator with two "pop rivets". We have ours fastened to the bottom of the horizontal evaporator so it opens down instead of up. Again this is to provide more access. I'd be glad to take pictures, but that will take some time. If you aren't in a hurry, let me know and let me know what you want. Roger and Suseie Mummah, s/v Endless Summer remummah@worldnet.att.net

YES

Craig: I have a 1985 H31 and recently installed a horizontal Cold Machine. Yes, it has a door. Unfortunately, it is set to lift "UP" which makes it difficult if you mount yours like I did mine at the top of the ice box. I solved the problem by drilling out the pop rivets holding the door and simply reversed the door so it hinges "down." I did have to drill two small holes in the evaporator (be VERY careful here...you don't want to drill through one of the cooling loops!), but it works like a charm. Doing it that way also allowed me to place a piece of insullation between the evaporator and the top of the ice box. When you get your unit, you will know what I mean. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me here or at TIDETIM@AOL.COM. Good luck! Tim (S/V "TIDE")
