We will be crusing in our "new to us" C30 this season for the first time. I want to make it as enjoyable for my wife as possible, so one thing that is a must is having a coffee maker on the boat. I am unsure which type to get: AC or DC. We will be hooked up to shore power most mornings although I'm leaning toward DC so it can be used anytime. What are your experiences with DC appliances? What is the downside? Thanks for any comments!

Coffee.... again

Coffee makers are back on the bridge folks. You might want to look at the archives for this one. Enjoy!

Other alternatives

A DC coffee maker is expensive and will draw a substantial amount of power from your house batteries when not tied up at the dock. consider other alternatives such as an old percolator which would be used on your propane stove anytime/anywhere! Or the new "coffee singles" by folgers and others only need boiling water, also availabe on the stove. Or get an AC model, brew up a pot and keep it in a thermos or carafe for when you are out on the water. good luck with the new boat!

French Maker

We a C30 and have tried an AC maker which only works on shore power, DC which drew too much power and finally settled on a French Press coffee maker where you pour boiling water in on top of the coffee, let it sit for a few minutes, press down the filter and pour out the coffee. Works well and the coffe is excellent. Benefit is that it works wherever you can boil water. Good luck on your new boat.

Nissan Stainless Steel Vacuum Press Pot

It brews, and it keeps your refills hot! Being stainless steel, it won't break and stands up to the marine environment. Sure, there's some plastic ones, but the Nissan is, well, elegant. Just one proviso -- when you press the filter down, do it s-l-o-w-l-y. Yelling "Fire in the Hole" and slamming it down like the dynamite igniter on "Bridge on the River Kwai" will produce a nasty scalding and waste good coffee!

Following "How Do You Make A Good Cup Of Coffee?" posted 01/16/2001 by Don Evans (about General_interest) there were 48 replies. Most praised infusion (Melitta, etc.) and the comments about 12 volt centered around current draw and long brewing times. There is no universal agreement. Oh Facrissake...

Not coffee again! You might as well ask where the best place is to get pizza cuz you'll get about as many different answers. Cheers, Bob

Dominos

Dominos is the best place to get Pizza. One of my relatives works in the pizza dough factory and distribution center. This is a high quality pizza dough. Dave

Percolator

Use a percolator on the stove that way you don't need to use electricity at all. You can get small ones for just a few cups of coffee. Dave

Melitta

Go to the Melitta web stie (below) and order a non-electric, drip, thermal carafe maker and make the hot water on the stove. Probably find cheaper prices if you look around the web.

12 VDC from Truck Stop

24.99 buys you a 4 cup Burton Coffee Maker at your nearest truck stop. The Burton model is 12VDC and uses 200 Watts or 16 Amps for about 20 minutes to make the coffee. Turn the pot off and put the coffee in a thermos. 4 cups of coffee will cost you a little over 5 amp hours of battery juice. PS just for grins I looked at a fancy Expresso gadget in a big kitchen store and that thing only drew 1600 watts and you had to leave it plugged in cause it took too long to make the steam for the drinks. I am sure glad I can live with the simpler things in life

David; Here's how we do it on Moondance. At the dock, we use an electric percolator. Set it up the night before and plug into an inexpensive timer and viola, when you wake, the coffee is done. Sublime! Away from the dock, we use a camping percolator on the stove. Also, set it up the night before. Get it percolating, then turn it down and perc gently for four minutes. Pour the first cup, put the rest into a carafe.

Dave of Ct. in your New to You C30

If this is the dave I think it is give me a call and we can discuss at length. I use a hexagonal shaped coffee maker that is used on the stove. The water goes in the bottom section, then a small basket that holds the coffee and then the top section is screwed on. When the water boils it is forced up through the basket and through the coffee then it goes up a tube in the top section where the coffee collects. It makes a GREAT cup of coffee. I got a few of these in New York when my kid was attending NYU at some store on the corner of 13th street and third ave. His dorm was upstairs from the store. These must be available locally or on the net. They come in different sizes for one or more cups. I have one every morning since I'm the only one that drinks coffee so it makes one perfect cup. Does your C30 have propane or alcohol stove? Dave

That settles it R.W.

I agree with R.W. that the owner of Dominos is a sportsman extraordinaire and his Pizzas reflect his competitive spirit. So it's settled on the Pizza question now WHO BREWS THE BEST BEER???? Is it Narragansett; Piels; Carling; or do any of you have another favorite? dave

Beer should be a seperate post.

I think it should be under Head Mistress. That's when we find out that the head doesn't work. r.w.landau

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for all the responses and sorry for bringing up a topic some of you are tired of! Based on the feedback, I will look to use the LPG stove as much as possible. Dave from Mystic: I am the Dave you think I am. Larry from CA: my C30 came with the name Moon Dance (we are keeping it). And the best pizza is served at The Nines, in Ithaca, NY.
