We are leaving it up to you to decide what you...

Tom: I leave this up to you to decide but this is probably one of the worst uses of DC power. Almost anything that needs to heat up. If you get this and you try it out, you OWE us a consumer report on the unit. We looked at these type of units and decided on a Stainless Steel Caraf with a melita coffee filter holder. We boil water in a kettle and pour it through the coffee. Good coffee everytime.

12v coffee maker is OK if you have time

The 12 V coffee makers are very slow at brewing coffee. Our 5-cupper takes about 20 minutes.

Forget 12v appliances

If you want good coffee, boil water and use a Melita drip system. It'll give you coffee as good as anything you'll get from a Mr. Coffee. Of course, that depends upon how good the coffee itself is...but that's true, no matter how you make coffee.

Time, bring a book

Ours takes 30 min for a pot. However it works well if you start it and then go take a shower, read a book, break out the sextant Bill

No Way!

I tried two different models in my 18 wheeler and they both delivered a luke warm cup of coffee about 30 minutes after I plugged them in.. Do as Peggy says and break out the tea kettle... Ron/KA5HZV

Wow, this is interesting!

This is interesting, in about 6 hours, four people who really hate their coffee makers have written. It seems that there is a design problem with the 12 v. coffee makers. 30 minutes a pot? Not good. I'll bow to the voices of experiance and skip this one. I can boil water and use the insulated caraf system. Thanks! you have just saved me $20.00!

Coffee for lunch

Hated my 12 volt coffee maker . Seems like the coffee was not brewed till lunch time . Just put in an inverter and 120 volt coffe maker this week . will try it at the Columbus Day Ragatta this weekend , hope to wake up to a perfect pot of coffee.

Inverter????

Hope you checked the wattage on your coffee maker and inverter. Coffee pots use a lot of power. Most draw over 1000 watts. That's 84 amp hours on a 12 volt system or enough to run a 12 volt refrigerator for 24 hours or more.... Ron/KA5HZV

Columbus Day

Hey Rob...have a good time down there in Biscayne Bay at the Columbus Day Regatta. I use to sail down there back in the 60's. Moved to West Palm Beach years ago and just love this area up here at Lake Worth Inlet. We're just 15 min. from Blue Water Sailing out in the Gulf Stream. Up to 45 mins.

I've seen some of these and they take up to 45 minutes to brew the pot. The coffee's stale by then. Then, what is the draw on the battery? What if you want a second pot - it'll be time for lunch? I have a percolator (8 cup) that I use on my stove. Once the perking starts - 5 minutes and I'm ready - in time for breakfast!

French press

The best way to brew coffee aboard (or anywhere else for that matter) is a French press. They cost anywhere from $10 to $50 but the cheap ones work just as well, so you know how much I paid for mine! They are a bit of a pain to clean up afterwards but the coffee is worth it. peter h23 "Raven"

This is probably the 5th time in 2 years this

Oh boy!

I saw this and thought here we go again. Few subjects illicit as much particiation and passion on this site. I think coffee and the PSS shaft seals create the most havick. One is suppost to drip and but won't the other is not but might. Hmmm.....

We use a percolator...

...old fashioned style, aluminum, on the Origo. Makes great coffee, percolator is cheap, cleans up nicely, no having to pour boiling water from one vessel to another. Our stove is gimballed, and we have the pot holder devices on the burners. So we make coffee when underway even in some moderately rough conditions. Coffee is an essential ingredient in a sailor's lifestyle. Just ask anyone who spent time in the Navy. Some of the stuff we drank would have kept a Yanmar running for hours.

New and New and Improved

I think Geoff from MI has it right The simple proven systems are the best. When i was younger I met an old salt in Mystic Conn who , after a few, confided in me that i would some day come to the realization that new is bad and new and improved is worse. Although not generally applicable i think it is right more often than not. I also seem to remember that my Mother, God rest her, put egg shells in the pot. I guess with todays new and improved food delivery systems, this would be a bacterial risk. She also used to beat an egg in milk when i was not feeling well to get " something in me" Raw egg today!!! Risky to order over easy But new is ............... Tony

Finishing touch...

...I use a grind filter in my percolator. It is a 9" square of filter paper (right next to the Melita filters) the fits into the percolator basket. Put in the grinds, fold the 4 corners over the percolator tube and let it go (pre-punched with holes). Clean up is a snap - just dump it into the trash.

COFFEE BAGS!!!!!!!

That's right! Just like tea bags, only coffee. Find them in the grocery store at the same place as tea bags. Minimal cleanup! Saves the batteries! As good as you make it!!! Chris S/V B
