I would like to know if anyone has ever tought of using a Code Zero sail design on there boat , used for upwind and reaching in light air , if so I would appriciate your opinion . I read an article in Sailing World Magasine september issue 2002 page 40 ( The Code Zero Advantage )that boats using fractional rig with non-overlapping headsails are most advantage by that sail design . Thanks in advance for your opinions . Regards Bernard Larocque . contactmarine@sympatico.ca

No Code Zero, Get a New Main!!

I have sailed and raced the 29.5 since 1994 and have tryed the 155% jib and other combinations. Two years ago I purchased a UK Tapedrive main and jib. The jib is 115%. I no longer use the 155%. The new main is 20% larger than the factory sail and the combination allows the boat to sail to the numbers. I have added a cruzing spiniker to the mix and have done very, very well. The difference in the size of the main and the additional horsepower is amazing. I would not hassle with any other combination. My experience has tought me that factory sails are cut small (to cut cost) and do not perform. My recommendation is to invest the Code-Zero money in a new main. You will love the difference. Bruce

Keep-it simple good idear

I appriciate your comments considering your experience , this is a new boat for me and I want to make sure I appriciate it , I haven't tried it yet , this replaces a C&C 29 MK11 that I enjoyed very much , my wife less . Please let me know of other improvements , the measurements of your new sails , your reefs . I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to . Where do you sail and what is your competition . Regards Bernard .

Larger sails

Hi Bruce, I just got a quote from Haarstick for new 115% Tri Radial Jib and a new Triradial Main that would be 10% bigger with a roach using the Freedom sailboat's sails shape with 5 battens and fairly rounded top (no Squre top). DO you have the specs of your sails like J,P,I,E to compare before I put in My order in. 20% increase is big ! Is the boat soft heels in puffs or accelarating nicely at 15% bank like it should ? I am maybe going with Pentex/Tafeta laminate so there is a significant $$$ motivation to get it perfect the first time...I am concern with chafing downwind and durability. Any comments Dacron versus Pentex ? Mario Canada

Contact for Measurements

Responding to both of the posts regarding sails on the 29.5... I sail in Lake Huron and race in many fleets (local, Lake Huron Assoc, Port Huron to Mac, etc.) I have two reefs and six battens. Four are full length and two are partial. This is a UK Tape Drive sail and holds its shape very well. The boat handles well with the new configuration and points very well. The only item I had to deal with are the jib tracks. When you get the jib to its maximum size (back to the shroud) the angle of the sheet does not work with the current tracks. I removed the rear most stainless handle and replaced the current jib tracks with a track that extends from the current position back to the aft end of the old handle. This works very well, though you have to be careful to hit the aluminum backing material under the handle. I am traveling internationally and do not have access to the sail size information, however, if you contact my sailmaker I am sure he will be more than glad to give you the specs.
