Keeping rain and snow out of the cockpit and the cockpit drains from freezing has been a problem in the past. How do you or would you go about securing his vulnerable area for flooding through the companion way? Heat tapes are not an option and covering with a tarp is inadequite. Suggests appreciated.

Shrink-Wrap the Boat.

That will do the trick. You can also shrink-wrap just the cockpit area.

Shrink Wrap

If you are going to shrink wrap any part of your boat, be sure to leave some space for it to 'breath.' If not, you'll have a moldy mildewy mess in the spring.

Cut a vent

To follow up on the "breathing" of the SW. I usually cut out a vent in the forward vertical wall and fashion a vent cover to protect from rain intrusion. Simple enough - just cut a wedge and tape it on. Then slit vent holes in the cover. I have a natural vent at the walk-thru transom at the stern. An advantage of using shrink wrap is that you can also leave a screened vent open for air flow-thru. :) :)
