h28.5 Cockpit Table
Mary:
I designed and built a table for an h28.5 last winter and used it, when needed, all summer '08. Unfortunately, I have no images of it while in use

, but it's a simple set-up that required only 2 holes to be drilled in the aluminum support for the pedistal guard. I didn't want a permanently mounted table (it's a small cockpit as is) but did need a table on those occasions when trays of food, snacks and beverages magically appear from below deck...
Description: it's a 2-piece table we keep stowed in the head. The table iitself is @ 18 x 26 and mounts
on top of the aluminum webbing of the Merriman pedistal guard. Access slots were cut inthe table to clear the 1" pedistal tubing just deep enough so the table butts to the face of the pedistal, also contoured to fit.
The mounting holes in the aluminum were drilled with the table in final position, penetrating from
beneath and
upward just enough to nick the base of the table @ each position. The table was removed and threaded inserts were installed at those 'nicked points', using inserts which corresponded to the thread of the (2) fastening nobs. The top surface of the table was not penetrated to install the inserts, so when used, the table is a 100% wood surface; I went w/ a butcher block appearance w/ teak/cherry/maple, aka - "using what was available".
The table is very secure when mounted with just these 2 fasteners, but more support was needed, just in case. Soooo, the 2nd piece to the 2-piece table (also the piece that took the most time to design, measure and fabricate) is a removable 3/4" dowel that inserts into a pre-drilled angled pocket in the base of the table. Because this dowel inserts at an angle, the base of the dowel terminates in a block with a face contoured for the 4" diameter of the base of the pedistal. The block allows for 2 web & velcro wrap-around straps to secure the block to the pedistal w/o drilling holes.
It's very stable, secure, assembles easily and is readily stowed when not needed. I just wish I had a picture of it in use, 'cuz then these 1000 words wouldn't be needed. Perhaps once the snow thaws and I get reaquainted with the boat, I'll take a picture and post it. 75 days till Splash '09!
