I have a 2009 Oceanis 31. Firstly, existing cockpit speakers damaged by previous owner, I'm finding them difficult to remove as they may have been siliconed in, so can't assess size until removed. Any ideas please? Also suggestions for replacement speakers, please.

Are these speakers installed in a vertical piece of the cockpit fiberglass?

Stu, they are both in the vertical face of the starboard cockpit locker. The forward one is covered in the locker by a timber shelf, the aft one is below the opening helm seat... very neat arrangement. I've so far been unable to get them out, having removed the four fixing screws, they feel as though they are glued in. Clearly, I don't want to damage the locker face but might have to resort to breaking the speakers to remove them. Seems funny that they are both so rigidly stuck!

Yes, no reason to glue 'em in, but that's what you've got since it seems you can get to the backs of them, too.

Try wire or a guitar string on two dowels and try to work it between the speaker and the fiberglass. If that doesn't work...you already have the answer.

Replacement speakers are pretty easy to find, those look pretty standard.

The speaker covers should just snap straight on... some will snap on then with a twist they lock in place. Sometime they have screws like yours just for good measure but not always...Righty tighty and lefty lucy should be the rule....If the previuos owner glued them on then track him down and :deadhorse:

Thanks Stu and ONECOOLAIR. I play guitar so string idea sounds like it might be useful although I tried using my smallest screwdriver to open the gap, not wanting to damage the locker, with no success. There are several reasons why I'd like to track down the previous owner and give him the proverbial! However, I've rectified most of his stupidity and the boat really is nice. I think he never really had the sails up as it was rigged by a monkey...

Simi,

We have the same speakers on our 36.7 and I can confirm that they are attached like no body's business. In addition, there is a weather cap on the back that is on just as tight. If you get them off, pm me and let me know how you did it!
