58 of responding Catalina owners say it's OK to use cockpit speakers in an anchorage, according to last week's Quick Quiz. 42 prefer to spend their evenings more quietly. What are your personal guidelines for using your outdoor speakers? Is it "Hey everybody, join our party!" or do you have limits for the times and volumes you use? Share your opinion -- loudly -- right here.

HI! I'M HERE!

I don't like shouting &, if I owned cockpit speakers, would keep the volume low enough so that my neighbors wouldn't be disturbed. This means just loud enough for me to hear. I know sound travels over the water so if someone asked me to turn it down, I'd do just that. There's nothing worse than an inconsiderate jerk who comes into an anchorage thinking the place is for him & him alone. This includes buzzing my boat with their jet skis, but that's another quiz altogether! LaDonna

watch the volume

Never have the radio on while leaving or entering an anchorage or marina. You will be unable to communicate easily with your crew (been there and done that). As for at anchor I like my music. I doubt my neighbors would like the same music so I play it very low...

I agree -- keep 'em down! We were rafted off a 51' Jenneau last weekend after a face and the owner was WIRED! He put on his rastafarian (sp?) hat and cranked the Jimmy Buffet. Now I like Jimmy Buffet -- especially when sailing -- but we couldn't hear each other think, much less talk! His wife finally hollered at him. But yes, I have no problem with speakers in the cockpit -- especially with some cool jazz and a glass of wine after a great day on the water. Like LaDonna says, it's certainly better than the jet skis and Cigarette boats! Chris Bloor Great Escape III C-42 #372

Just Fine

I believe that if someone is playing the radio using their cockpit speakers just as long as they are considerate to others it is fine. On my mooring often their is no one around so I will play my music loud. But if there are people around then I will turn it down. It all has to do with you who is around you, if no one, who cares!

More than the use, I think the volume is the issue. As long as those listening to and enjoying music keep the volume at a reasonable level, every can enjoy an acchorage together.
