After a lot of research, I believe that the Oday 272 will be the best sailboat for me and my family. We used to have a Chrysler 22 (slow) and still have a Force5. The only question I have is the cockpit size and comfort. How large is it and is it comfortable since I plan to spend more time there then below. Also is the deck easy to move around on. Steve

Think about this

I have the O'Day 27 which is the earlier model. --It weighs 1600 lb more than the 272 --It's PHRF rating is faster --It's a hell of a lot cheaper

272 questions

Steve, I own a 272 and will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. The cockpit is 7'in length, but keep in mind that the 272 is tiller steered, so there is really not 7'of seating space when underway because of the throw of the tiller. The 272LE is wheel steered, but I don't know how that affects the seating while underway. I am 5'10" and can sleep comfortably in the cockpit. The companionway entrance is raised slightly from the cockpit seats so there is less chance that water in the cockpit will drain into the cabin if the hatches are not in place. Because the seat wraps around the front of the cockpit, there is little chance that you will get pooped and have water flow into the cabin. With a beam of 9',the deck is easy to move around on, but it is a bit narrow where the shrouds are attached.I usually use a shroud as a handhold and swing inside them when going forward. If you haven't already done so, read the boat reviews. You can get some information about the 272 and the 27 and compare the two. There is also a website for ODayJapan which has the original sales brochure printed at the site. It has lots of information in it. Go to http://members.aol.com/oday272j/index.htm Tom Tom
