Cockpit Seat Locker Latches

In my field notes regarding the Vega I've just bought in Mexico
(which I won't see again until mid-October) I noted that I needed to
replace all four of the existing cockpit seat locker hatches. Two of
them sort of work but are worn, the other two are non-functioning.
Has anyone replaced with a currently available item that was close?
Remember what it was? I'd like to take them down with me when I go.

Have you downloaded the spares "pdf" file from

There are some custom made covers in their catalogue. Also check out
yahoo group message #1928. There was some discussion there on how to
make your own. Sorry, I don't know if BoatUS or West Marine carries
anything standard that might fit. If you find something, please
share, as I will have to deal with this, myself.

I replaced mine last year. I used solid laminated pine that is 24inch wide
shelving material. I made templates using the existing covers. Cut sanded
and finished with six coats of "cetol". They look good and unlike plywood,
the edge is not laminated. Therefore water cannot infiltrate and cause
delaminating. I'll let you know how it lasts.

I replaced the three cockpit locker hatches this spring with new ones made up
in Wilmington, NC from my old ones. I left the old ones with the shop down
there for possible future use for anyone else. Cost was $270 made out of 1/2"
stock with re-enforcing cleats underneath. They look great and are holding up
with no problems, even with three guy's scrambling around during races in
rough conditions. I did not re-use the original piano hinges, so new hinges
were extra of course.

Ken, regarding the locker covers(seats) I made a full set last off season with old 3/4" white oak t&g flooring. Lay that over plywood that fits in the locker hole. Oil,OIL,OIL.

Hello Chris & Walt, was off line & missed Chris's note first time
round but caught it here. . .will check out the references, thanks.
Walt, I'm probably eventually going to make pretty hardwood
seats/lids but that could be a long ways down stream. Right now I
just want to effectively secure the hatches against potential bad
conditions. I've never had solid water in the cockpit with me even
in a Potter, but the idea of a loose hatch offshore even a little
ways seems pretty bad. . .so this is a latches only problem at the
moment. Well. . .varnish too. . .but that's easy!

PS--I am planning on being at Lopez Friday evening in the Potter,
given weather, no crises at work and so forth.
