Cockpit locker lids

The old hatches on my Vega's cockpit lockers are now well past their sell-by date. I'm planning on making new ones and was wondering if anybody had already done this and could offer advice?
The old hatches are 12mm thick in total including the veneer. My plan is to use 6mm marine play as a base, with 6mm thick Iroko on top, in strips 50mm wide. I haven't decided yet if I will attempt to replicate the pattern of the original veneer or to go for something simpler and easier.
I presume the best way of constructing these will be to epoxy the Iroko strips into place- but what do I put between the strips? Some sort of flexible caulking?

I've read that when veneering you should veneer both sides to keep the piece "balanced".
I've noticed that plywood sheets with an odd number of veneer layers (ie 5ply vs 4 ply) seem to stay flatter than those with an even number of layers.

My locker lids are solid teak, but I have had problems with one of them repeatedly splitting. I've tried cleaning it with acetone and epoxying it, but no luck. The other lid never has problems. Probably something to do with grain orientation....

I might try making some new lids out of teak or maybe brazilian cherry or ipe. If I do, I will probably incorporate some kind of bulb type gasket (like on car doors/trunks) to get a good seal to the fiberglass hull.

Of course the easy way to have beautiful new cockpit locker lids is to buy some from Steve Birch...

Rob, I have two brand new teak lockers never used. Solid 1/2" teak, stailness steel screws, looks great. $600 for the two of them.

Nico,
Here is a link to the Spares catalog on the site that I think Steve runs: http://www.albinvega.co.uk/pdf/Spares_Catalogue.pdf

I sometimes have problems with getting downloads to work on the site.
You probably noticed the date of the catalog is 2001. Steve must be doing the right thing and spending more time sailing that updating the Catalog.....

As a sidenote, I really enjoy your blog. It is a tempting source of procrastination while I am stuck at my desk. Sorry to hear about your recent loss... -Tim

Steve,
is £195 the current price for the standard lids? Is there a photo available of these? The deluxe ones look lurvely but I\'m saving up for new sails so cheap and cheerful wins the day...

Hi ,
The previous owner replaced the lids on my Vega, however he forgot to attach the keepers . If anyone has 5 original latches, or the upper parts I would be interested.
Thanks,
Emil.
