we have a muched loved - and sailed!! - 26.5. problem with sound idea for making the stern cockpit ladder more comfortable to use when climbing in and out of the water. several ideas but looking for any sound - and proven - ways of stopping those narrow and round mettalic steps digging into the soles of the feet. without having to wear the army surplus boots - the heavy studded - ww11 british army issue that is that dad left me. ted.

Pain

My 33 has essentialy the same ladder as your 27 and the rungs were very uncomfortable to climb. The previous owner had purchased teak ladder tread plates which he never installed. I installed them and it made a world of difference. Just look for "Battle Axe" at Tices Shoal next summer if you want to see what they look like.

try E&B or West Marine...

They sell a kit that worked perfectly on my boat's ladder

If appearance is a big deal...

Personnally, I didn't care for the look of the bottom side of the ladder steps when the ladder is in the "up" position. I voted to remove the teak steps and decided to climb up the ladder sideways; placing the entire foot on the ladder distributes the weight over more supporting "bone" and doesn't hurt your feet. Oh yeah, it's free.

Inexpensive Fix

It is not the most attractive fix, but annually I buy the inexpensive pipe insulation(foam) and cut it to length for each rung of the ladder, it makes the climb out of the water much more enjoyable. As for putting your foot sideways, if you a slightly overweight it hurts. Enjoy.
