Out sailing yesterday great wind . boat was heeled for long time and discovered a leak at the cockpit drain. this is hard to discribe because it looks like a big blob with a tube sticking out of it that the drain hose attaches to. the leak seems to be between hull and blob.I am second owner and do not know if this is factory or po attempt to fix leak. thanks

Hey Gary,

I think you are describing pretty much how Hunter built the thru-hull for cockpit drains (and engine exhausts) on the Cherubini designs - I know my 1983 H37c is the same. I believe that Hunter basically took a piece of metal tube and glassed it into the hull with a big blob of resin with filler and / or glass strands. Because these "thru-hulls" are above the waterline (except when heeled over) no shut-off valve was required, so Hunter was able to avoid the cost of a threaded thru-hull and valve.

If your leak is between the hull and the 'blob' you may need to consider cutting / grinding off the original tube and installing a proprer thru-hull. Keep us informed of the outcome (and take some pictures!) because I think all of us Cherubini Hunter owners could potentially have to deal with similar problems some day.

Not all Cherubini's built that way

As the original owner of a '79 H30, I can tell you that, at least for my boat, Hunter put bronze through hulls on both the exhaust and cockpit drains.
To Gary and others in the "Blob" boat group, my sympathies.

Well in defense of my Hunter it is a very solid "blob" at least. :) I mean you could stand on it without fear of breakage. But it does make the job of adding a shutoff nearly impossible.

Are you certain about where the leak originates? There is a bronze tube surrounded by much resin and glass. Hard to believe that it is leaking through that. I would sooner guess at a split in the hose under the clamps. Or even further up and it is trickling down.

Could you please send a picture of exact location?
I have an '82 model, but am still learning and I could be facing same problem
