Cockpit drain

Oh yea I now have the new cockpit drain installed and the new patch in the cockpit sole installed with the first layer of glass and resin. Two more layers of glass tape and resin and she'll be ready to grind down to a feater edge then add the rounded fillets and it will be ready to paint. At least now its a thru hull in the cockpit sole and not a chance that it can become dislodged. Have to get a coupler for the hose as it was just a bit short to reach the thru hull in the transom but no big deal, I might even add a ballcock so we don't have to mess about with a stopper. At least now when it rains the water will no longer drain into the cabin bilge. I also discovered that there is enough room to add 2 lockers to the cockpit seats both port and starboard. The remaining space I'll fill with 2 part pour in foam to add positive flotation. Next project will be installing the water tank and maybe painting the inside cabin before closing her up for the winter.

As long as the glass surface is clean and I mean devoid of dust, oils, water etc then yes the foam adheres to it very well. If you have ever used spray foams from a hardware store then you will have an idea as to how well it sticks lol. While urathane foam is closed celled, prolonged exposure to water will allow it to absorb some. The 2 lb density is what is typically used in boats for positive flotation purposes. The prices for the 2 part gallon kits here in Nova Scotia Canada are ridiculous but I did find a place in Florida that even with shipping included was about 66% of the cost locally.

Oh yeah sticks to skin great, I made the mistake of using spray foam one summer while wearing shorts, I still cringe everytime I see a can of the stuff.
Sounds like you have made a big time improvement to the drain, any photos? Does make you wonder why someone would design a boat that has the cockpit draining into the cabin bilge, I guess it made sense at the time.

Actually the drain ran out thru the transom originally. It was the elbow that turned up into the cockpit that became dislodged thereby leaving only the hole. When it rained or water was taken aboard then it ran downhill into the cabin bilge. All in all a very poorly designed and implemented self drain for the cockpit. It still works the same way except now I have a 90 degree thru hull in the cockpit sole and a straight thru hull out the transom with a hose connecting the two.

The really sad part was the only way to access that area is by cutting out the cockpit sole well most of it anyways.

Ok just a few pics of the new cockpit sole and the thru hulls and hosing connection. Note I may replace the coupler in the stern locker with a ballcock in the future so that we could prevent any following seas from flushing into the cockpit.

Thanx. Hopefully this coming spring will see the last of the major work being done to her. We now have a confirmed mooring and hopefully (better still) a slip for 2012 . So what is the sailing like over on the Bay of Fundy? I imagine one has to be very leary of the tides.
