Cockpit Drain Leak

Hi,I'm getting ready to drop the keel on my '73 C22.One of the reasons I'm doing this is to try to figure out where the water is coming into the boatfrom. I think it's getting in from the area where the cockpit drain goes through the hull. The pipeis definatly lose. Has anyone had a similiar problem?Thanks,Tim

Loose bolts on rudder

I did not have a problem with the cockpit drain, but I did find a leak at the the bolt holes for the bottom bracket of the rudder. The bolts for the bracket were extremely loose and would allow water to come in. Normally the bolts are just above the waterline, but I found that my boat had settled a little, puting them under the waterline. If you have a leak somewhere, you may want to check this.

Make sure it is not the sink drain . . .

IF you have the valve for the sink drain open while sailing, or while water drains fron the cockpit, it will come out the sink drain and into the boat. Make sure this is not your issue.Regards,Ted

Replace It

Even if it is not the problem (sounds to me like it is) Catalina Direct recommends replacing it before it becomes a problem. They sell a direct srew on replacement for 21.95. I have not replaced mine yet, so I cannot say how "brainless" it may or may not be.Good Luck.

I had a Cockpit Drain Leak Last Summer

Tim: I had a cockpit drain leak last summer. Pour ice water down the drains and feel the hoses to find out where they might be leaking. I thought it was the hose clamps or the plastic hoses, but what it turned out to be was that the copper pipe has a hole worn through it where it was rubbing against a hole that was sawn in the liner that lines the compartment under the cockpit. I sawed the hole bigger, then sealed the hole in the copper pipe with marine silicon sealer. The ice water makes it a little easier to feel the leak. As suggested earlier, it could be the sink drain hose too. This must be closed while sailing. Open up the valve and pour ice water into this hose too, and check it for leaks. You will figure it out and fix it. Aldo
