I have an H36 and am thinking about adding cockpit cushions. Any advice from those out there who have them? She will be primarily used in the Pacific Northwest, Puget Sound & San Juans. Thanks!

I have had both Bottomsiders and Sunsure cushions in different boats. The bottomsiders were quick to wipe dry after rain or dew but burning hot if they were in full sun. A big drawback was ink from books or newspapers would transfer like you could do with silly putty when you were a kid. On the plus side they are very comfortable and can float. They also nick rather easily and puncture too.

The Sunsure I have now dry more slowly but don't hold the water like regular foam would. No image transfer problems and no nicks or punctures. They aren't as comfortable but not all that bad. Mine are over 10 years old and beginning to split at the seams here and there. I think they float but never tried it.

My cushions are covered with Phifertex® outdoor fabric. Wears really well, does not get hot, easy to clean and does not scratch or tear. They are attached to the seat with snaps but you could use velcro.

Purchased set of cushions from Ameriseam.

I purchased a set from this site. They shipped from Florida. Very happy with them. I had to send them a pattern and they were cut to fit. This was for my 1979 Hunter 30'.
Company that made them is Ameriseam out of Tampa, FL.

The cushions look almost as good today as when I purchased them in 2008. I bring them home when I lay the boat up in November and give them a soap and water wash down. The fabric is a type of weave vinyl with a closed cell foam with Sunbrella piping. Colors to match my canvas which is Jockey Red. Cushions stay in place without any snaps. The transom cover I use sometimes as a back rest.

From company web site: "Our cushions are made of closed-cell foam and Sunsure a tightly woven fabric made with PVC-coated yarn. The 2" closed-cell floatable foam will not absorb water. This combination gives you a cushion that dries quickly and floats. The woven fabric is also cooler than cushions that are dipped in plastic.

Installation hardware is provided for a complete package. Simple snaps are installed to keep cushions in place.

White, Grey, Navy, Forest Green, Pacific Blue and Porcelain are our standard mesh colors. Piping is provided in the following colors: navy blue, captain navy, jockey red, toast, burgundy, cadet grey, black, white, beige and forest green . We can provide other mesh and piping colors for an additional fee."

Ian, are those vinyl covers or Sunbrella? I really like the contrasting red piping. I have an old set on my H30 that was going to be my next sewing project. I was planning on white Sunbrella with forest green piping to match my other canvas. It may be better to stick with vinyl though......easier to keep clean.

I also made some cockpit cushions using white Phifertex Plus fabric that I bought from Sailrite. They also sell contrasting vinyl piping. I did not use any snaps to secure them and they stay in place without shifting. They also never get hot and clean up like a dream. I used 2" open cell foam inside to they drain any water easily. It probably was the nicest addition to our boat we've made. Prior to that we always had a sore butt!

We have the sunsure on our O'Day 272 and they have been perfect....easy to clean, quick
to dry and the jockey red piping has never faded....had them approx. 8 years, perhaps 10.
Prior to the sunsure we had the other brand (c-cushions) mentioned above....some
one was evidently smoking in our cockpit one even and left a small burn mark..Long story short, they wanted nearly the replacement price to repair...instead, orded the sunsure (white w/red piping) for less than the repair quote...ordered from Sailboat owners.com they were ready in a flash...have never regretted the change. .PS, we have snaps but do not use them.....they stay in place.
