Cockpit cushions sliding

I'm sure there is a simple solution to this -- we just haven't come up with it yet so I thought I'd ask. How do we keep the cockpit cushions from sliding when we're sailing? (ok, besides never heeling, which isn't an option!) We had all the boat cushions at home over the winter and didn't bring them back until recently, when we were cruising with out-of-town family. They stayed put with a cockpit full of people, but usually it's just the two of us -- and we're either picking them up or stepping over them. We don't use any while racing and have gotten into the habit of only bring up one or two small cushions to move around where we sit while cruising. The cushions came with the boat and are in really good condition -- the covers wash up nicely -- so we don't want to replace them. We just want to keep them on the benches. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Diane, We have a Hunter 44 and also owned a Hunter 340. On both boats we've cut pieces of the rubber nonslip material that you would put under a rug at home on a hardwood floor. You can purchase it at HomeDepot or Lowes or a carpet store. Try and use the stuff with the large pattern. Works very well for us, we cut a piece for each cockpit cushion, plus they roll up for easy storage. Bob Martin

Nonslip Line-All

I agree with Bob that nothing works better than the rubber nonslip material used under rugs. Have had it aboard my 30T for 8 years and even when healed 15-20 degrees the cushions always stay in place. West Marine carries it under the name Nonslip Line-All (Pg 901 of WM 2005 Master Catalog). I have also lined all my onboard cupboards with it and it is wonderful.

ditto plus on our 410 we...

...brought the rubberized mesh non skid material referred too ( I recall we found two quality levels and bought the better of the two from one of the boat stores) and then lightly stitched it to the underside of all the cusions with fine fish line so it picks up with the cushions. We're on our 3rd season with this setup and not a sign of wear and tear and the cusions stay put even at 20 degrees heel :)

Nice idea Mulf.

We also have used the rubber nonslip under the cushions. And always picked them up separately. Stitching them to the naugahyde is a great idea! Especially since mine are one-sided, they have a flap with snaps.

Tried it today

Thanks all -- I had a piece of the non-slip at home and tried it on one of the side bench cushions today. The cushion stayed put and so did I (I've found myself on the floor of the cockpit before, on top of the cushion!) although we weren't heeling as much as we sometimes do. Our cushions are two-sided and the covers come off to wash, so I won't be stitching or tacking them to the fabric, but I'm definitely going to buy a quantity of the grippers and cut one to size for each cushion. Another boater in the marina hadn't thought of it before either but will be doing the same. I knew there'd be a good solution and that I'd find it here!

non slip

Don't buy that rubber, non-slip mesh from West Marine when you can buy it at Costco or Target for 1/4 the price. It's not a marine product....it's just rubber.

woosies

Cockpit cushions are for woosies! Where I come from, we sit on nails and broken beer bottles... and we don't wear undies. ARRRR!

Seat cushions

I bolted a little fiddle along the inboard edge of the seat, protruding above the seat surface by half the cushion thickness. Besides keeping the cushion in place, it adds a bit of trim to the seat. When I was gifted with a complete set of canvas worker's tools and materials, I added Common Sense fasteners along the outboard edge.

Don't invite me ...

Gar, glad you're enjoying yourself but don't invite me onto your boat! By the way, the rubber non-slip works great for the cooler too!
