Cockpit cover screws

I am having trouble with cockpit cover screws binding up. I have been taking them out and putting them in with a drill, for what that is worth. Maybe they are getting too hot? Anyway several of the holes have become impossible to get a screw into. The head of one screw striped as I was taking it out. Fortunately I could get a pipe wrench on it and get it out the rest of the way. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I guess at this point I need to re-tap the holes.

Edmund,
I removed all my original fasteners, drilled out the holes in the cockpit floor fiberglass to 1/2", and popped in 1420 Blind Well Nuts, and used 1/4" #20 machine screws to hold down the floor.

They stand up pretty well to repeated removal with a power drill. The odd one has failed in the five years they've been in, but I just pop out the old one and put in a replacement.

I buy them at a local fastener store, and I've also seen them on ebay, listed under "1420 well nuts"

I used well nuts too. I used a spade bit to get down to fresh glass and then epoxied the well nuts. I roughed them up with 60 sandpaper first. And I use philips head screws.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.
