I made this platform the other day so that we could sleep in the cockpit and thought I'd share it. I think it is going to be a good deal for us.

Besides the bed deal if we leave the first slat in at the front.....

....of the cockpit we have a place for drinks and the same....

....if we leave the last slat in the back of the cockpit.

Also we will keep two middle slats in the motor well and we can pull them out and...

...use them as a table between us when needed.

There are 11 slats total and the first and last will probably be left in place most of the time. As mentioned 2 will be kept in the outboard well for easy access. The other 7 will fit in a bag that Ruth will make and be stored in the lazarette. They don't take up that much space, about 6 inches by 7 inches by 24 inches long.

The angle cut on the end of the board really takes all of the weight. The tabs on the end just help to position the board and the make it easy and quick to just throw the boards into position. Setup is less than a minute and so is take down.

We will use the cockpit cushions to cover the cockpit and they fit around the traveler. On top of them and to clear the traveler we bought one of those double wide inflatable camping pads.....

We are also going to take the mattress out of the aft berth to free up some space since we normally don't sleep there (haven't to this point). If we do want to we will use the Big Agnes pad there.

There are construction pictures here.....

I keep saying "Wow!" when I see your posts, Sum.

That's going to be a great addition. I made something to serve the same purpose years ago on my old boat. It was a piece of plywood supported by six legs. It was awkward and hard to stow. You've solved that problem and I think you and Ruth are going to find that of all your mods, this will be one of the most useful. Us old guys need our sleep.

As usual, nice work!
I'm surprised you don't use the aft berth though. We always thought the 26C had the best sleeping quarters of any boat in its class.

Wow, as always I am impressed and you can bet I will be imitating your mod for my boat. Thanks again for all the inspiration.

Thanks guys, Ruth is really happy with this one :).

.....What kind of wood is that?
The wood is cedar and is just the stuff you get from the lumber yard to make fences with that has the two 45 degree cuts at the top sides. It costs a couple bucks a board here. It is soft and light, so not a hard wood, but my fence is going on 5 years old and I left it un-coated/un-protected.

It is the same stuff that I used, along with some redwood, when.....

We have had a couple hours a couple of nights where sleeping in the back berth would have given us less motion at anchor. One reason for the pad, so we can still use it in that situation if needed.

Sum, as always

you seem to amaze us! Great job on the cockpit bed. I like the idea of the removal of each slat. I'm going to make the cup holders for sure and use that design. Thanks again!! Jerry Mac
