I have had the same question, but have no idea where to start looking for info to do the same with a 9.8 Mercury. Help us out, got to be someone out there with the solution.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to answering your question, but could not get logged in to forum.
I have a morse single lever control mounted on my tiller with short mercury cables connected to my electric start mariner9.9 motor. The cables are 6 feet I think but it is really nice to be able to control speed and direction forward and reverse with one hand.
The single lever came out of a junk I/O boat I made a new tiller to mount controls on so if it didn't work I still had original tiller.

Edson wheel and helm controls on boat

Oday 25 has Edson wheel and had helm controls to 20hp Mariner and fixed motor. First time out motor seized. Had a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke so I switched them out. Throttle/shift cable control ends didn't match to new motor so I left them disconnected. Would of had to replace the entire cable...being a newbie at the time I didn't want to go to that extent. I now lean over to shift but I added a throttle extension so I can easily reach it while standing at helm. Engine is free to turn when needed. Steer with wheel. In tight quarters I release the motor to turn and can spin boat almost on its axis. Works fine for me. No need to change it.
