Nice and Easy, Are you saying that a

76 Venture 25' boat is a seaworthy boat? I know you better than that... You have to have the right tool for the right job.

Yanking Our Chain!!!

Every so often there is a post like this of a foolish voyage in an unsuitable boat. Anyone who has ever been in the ocean in a small light displacement boat in foul weather knows that this is a bad ideal. I saw a catalina 22 after it rolled and broke off it's mast in Texas. The breakers in the pass were not that bad for our 28' heavy displacement boat but the Catalina surfed down the wave and broached then rolled. Fortunately it didn't sink and someone towed the boat to safety. The owner went for a swim but didn;t drown. Something like this between the jetties can have a happy ending. But a couple of miles offshore at night the ending might not be so happy!!!! A 25' boat that weighs in at 2500#s is just not the same as a 25' boat that weighs in at 8000#s. But any boat can roll and the shorter the boat the smaller the wave that is capable of rolling said boat. I am all for going sailing in a small lightly built boat in protected water. Popeye can have a great cruise if he respects the limitations of his boat. If he is smart he will put it on a trailer and tow it to whereever he wishes to sail on protected water. It would be a great boat on the inside of the Keys and in Hawk channels on good days. But even in Hawks channel it would get beat up on windy days.

Experienced with the M26

I've been in rough conditions with a M26 classic which was my first boat but nothing like you are planning. I personally would not try that trip in a Venture 25 unless I could buddy boat with somebody that has a M26x. That way if it got really snooty out there in the big water, the other guy could pull me home at 20 knots or so. ;-)

Not so Crazy

A few folks from here do the trip around Florida buddy boating in Catalina 22s almost every year. Not at all a "Pleasure Cruise" but certainly doable. In college we often sailed a Catalina 22 to Maui from Honolulu and always enjoyed the trip, but at 20 tolerances are high and a few other things are lower. I just returned from a trip with my neighbor on his trawler to Marathon and saw nothing that I would sail my Hunter 23.5 in except for the night we sat at anchor at Captiva Island, but we had anticipated that weather and planned on it. If I had a month rather than a couple of weeks to get to Marathon I would certainly consider doing it on my boat. On the other hand I could load it on the trailer and be there in a weekend.

Seaworthy???

Jim, I am saying that the Venture 25, in capable hands is certainly capable of making that 100 mile crossing. ( Notice I said capable hands) The upper Fla. panhandle crossing, is almost always an easy shot. While it would be considered offshore by many, it is actually protected from the north and east, and is most of the time a very smooth sail. Other than making the short jump across the Fla. panhandle, this entire trip can be made inside. The Venture, with a fairly short mast and shallow draft, should be well suited for this.

Cape San Blas!!!!

Cape San Blas is Scarey for me!!!! With the shoals out 20 miles and no where safe to run. Even at Panama city I've seen 15' waves standing around outside ht ejetties on a falling tide. Made me nervous and a few passengers puke on my Pearson 323. I wouldn't want to be there in a Catalina 22. I owned a Helsen 22 which is simular to a catalina 22. A very capable lake boat but I had it surfing in 4' waves in a large lake. I sure wouldn't want to be surfing in 6-8' waves in a Helsen 22!!!! The same for my old Mac 26 (1988) it was a great boat in the lakes and bays but it would surf very easily. With the little rudder hanging off of the back I was easily overpowered. Sometimes the tiller would bend until I was afraid that it was going to break. I never took the Mac 26 out in the open ocean!!!! But I really liked the boat and kept it for over seven years..only selling it to buy a larger boat. I am no old salt as my ocean experience is limited. But I have been out there enough to know that the ocean doesn't suffer fools.

Captain E

Its been done many times.

Popeye, Its really on your experiance and skills. Most sailers in this thread are accustomed to "casual" cruising and pick sailing as a hobby/ fun sport. As a result, they look for comfort and safety first. Sailers as far as a thousand years ago have traveled rough seas on open boats, people in those time did it as a neccesity and survival. I do believe with modern technolgy with weather and navigational charts that anybody, even in a canoe can make this travel. People have rowed boats around the world, with the right preparation and skilled sailor, this would be a fun easy passage. Make sure you do your homework. eg: do your reasearch... Fun Fun Fun!
