Go for it

I take my 19 in the Gulf. Maybe I'm the wrong guy to talk to as I also take a 12' Hobie in the Gulf

We had a recent race from tampa to key west,

It is about 240 miles or so and it was done in a j-24. They agreed it was a little small but had a great time even when the wind blew.

What should I know

before I consider taking my 23.5 on vacation. I've sailed in almost every weather condition central ohio provides. I have been out 10-15 miles on my Dad's powerboat, but was wondering how difficult the transition would be for me sailing? We only go out on calm days by the way. Any and all advice or comments will be appreciated. Brent

Couple of Things I can Think Of

Right off the top of my head the only additional legal requirement you'll be need is flares if you do not already have them. A VHF and Charts would also be a good idea. Where are you going? There are probably local things someone here can tell you about. Important things like where to eat and where to buy beer.
