Since my doctor retired me early and now have time on my hands, I am trying to plan a trip east from mobile sometime this summer.
maybe July- August. After the Dauphin island race of course. I have been actively searching for a hunter 33 or 34 to purchase and have decided to keep my cherubini 30 and just fix her up. She's in the yard now getting estimates on new paint/ engine anticipating some fun times this year.

Fair winds and look out for us on the water soon.

Can you do that Chuck, cruise down there in July or August? I visited Ladylove last August there in mid-Florida. It was really hot and humid. I worked on the boat a couple of days and was miserable except in the cabin where I had the A/C running. I saw no one on the water. Of course right now I'd give half my meager savings to be down there in the summer.

Yes, you can cruise the gulf coast in July and August, but you better bring your credit cards. You will find yourself going into Marinas to plug in and run the A/C much more often than you like. Also, bring lots of heavy lines. You will want to be securely tied up in a marina or natural hurricane hole. The biggest of anchors and the stoutest of rodes will not hold a boat in a hurricane. Only shelter from the winds and waves and multiple, multiple lines will save you. Enjoy

I can think of more agreeable months to sail the gulf coast. The sun is nearly overhead at that time.

guess im just use to it being raiesed here and do have A/C onboard. Right on the head though its hottest months so i,ll probably be hanging out at pirates cove or another marina alot .. Come on Down and enjoy it. lol

Yep, I've done the Mississippi islands a couple of times in August because of work time constraints.. The heat can be bad but anchored out by the islands, the Windscoop keeps enough air flowing .. The only real challenge, other than hurricanes, are the daily 4 PM pop up thunderstorms.. Ya have to close up the boat and it can REALLY get hot while that is going on. They usually last about 20-30 minutes as you know, then are gone.. You know, Chuck, from pushing long ones how the wind from those storms can puff up and change directions.

wesailed gulf in summer--this summer we will be fixing a formosa and staying in sunny kaliforniaktion..lol....getting ready to add yet another fiberglass boat to the roles of them in gulf ...lol......we sailing in winter-spring this yr..lol...have fun--the lightning is fierce and the rain comes--but the SAILING is awesome LOL....what a punch those storms pack in wind LOL.......fast!!!! we were hitting 10 kts easy...LOL....

My motto is if I can work in it, I can play in it! Manual labor all day inland has acclimated me to the heat more than most. Sailing under bimini I hardly even sweat. Surprises me on the water how comfortable compared to 90 miles inland where I live/work. If the wind dies, or I am hot, I just hit the water!

what we found was the heat wasnt the bad guy--was the incessant lightning striking around us in middle of gulf lol...was a gas to sail in but the electricity falling out of the sky wasnt exactly comforting--but the winds in thoise storms was just awesome and the sailing was FAST!!!!!!!! hooooooyah......lol.....just watch the weather and avoid the lightning--no there is not a way to avoiud it and nothing short of having a cat on board to prevent lightining strikes..lol.....a neighbor of phillips had 2 strikes on his boat in 4 yrs-----he is a nasa engineer--lol----but we didnt have any protection from lightning and were fine--i attribute it to kat..LOL,,,,have fun---~~~~~~~~~_/)~~~~~~~~~~

Don't let the naysayers

Chuck,
Don't let the naysayers put you off. The heat is bad, if your tied up in a marina. Sailing is pretty comfy. Sun makes the solar work super. Spent most of last summer out and about. From June to Nov., with a break in August. You know all about the afternoon thunderstorms. Just something you have to live with. Hell, I don't need to be telling you this stuff. Your out there more than just about anyone on this board. Go out and enjoy. Lots of places to duck into and hide if it gets nasty.
Whatever you do, don't miss the Tortugas.
