Coast Guard Dollars

Everyone knows that the Coast Guard most of the time try to do a good job. This is true in especially hazarardous waters. But ... with the new dollars awarded the Coast coming from the tax payers I am seeing an awful lot of Coast Guard personel in their new boats and equipment stopping boats both sail and power to do their "inspections" on boats that in no way warrant being stopped. In Chicago they hang out at the locks waiting for victims so that they can fill out their paper work and justify their new toys. They would be better off staying at the dock to be on call when there is a real emergency instead of self grand standing with their presence and wearing out the new equipment.

COME TO PENSACOLA

WE HAVE IN PENSACOLA, A NAVY AIR BASE THAT TRAINS PILOTS FROM ALL OVER THE WROLD. THE PORT OF PENSACOLA RECEIVES SHIPMENTS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD. I AM OUT ALL THE TIME ON THE WATER AND HARDLY EVER SEE ANY COAST GAURD AROUND HERE. I AM NOT DOGGING THESE GUYS BUT THEY ARE NOT AROUND ANYWHERE HERE DESPITE HAVING A BASE. PEOPLE SAIL AND BOAT JUST A 100 FEET FROM THE BASES AND THE PORT NO ONE EVER SAYS ANYTHING OR CHASES YOU AWAY FROM THE BASE OR PORT. SEND THOSE GUYS DOWN HERE WE COULD USE THEM. I'VE BEEN ON THE WATER FOR 13 YEARS USUALLY ONCE A WEEK AND HAVE NEVER BEEN BOARDED OR INSPECTED.

We have a little of that in Elizabeth City

We have had some of the same problem in our area. We have the largest Coast Guard Base on the east coast and they stop me and other boaters all the time. I support the Coast Guard but when a boater gets stopped by N C Wildlife and Coast Guard both and given tickets for same offence by both that is a little much to me. Just not enough work to do I guess.

Balance on the west coast

The ports we sail on the west coast seem to have a good balance with CG & Navy being available when needed but otherwise they seem to be going about their business. I was boarded one afternoon in Ventura after a day sail. It was mostly a training exercise for a couple of the young men. Took about half an hour and was even a little entertaining. My wife had fun taking their pictures. But San Diego is the best place I know of to watch how my tax dollars are being spent. Great boats & aircraft to watch & interact with every weekday. They take their security job seriously and I have only recieved warning when I mistakenly got myself in areas or zones where I should not have been.

They can do that?

When did it become legal for the Coast Guard to hand out tickets? Isn't that like the army handing out tickets? This doesn't sound good.

Had Two Coast Guard units in my area

This weekend I saw Two Coast Guard boats in my area. I have never seen them before checking boats in Monroe Bay. They didn't seem to stop any sailboats (which is a good thing because they were hanging out in the narrow part of the channel) but they were stopping powerboats. I have seen the marine police doing this before too. One question that I have is that I have heard that the Virginia and the Maryland Marine Police can't board my boat because it is Documented...is that true?

Coast Guard

Sounds like some people just like to bash the government which, in this case, may be frivilous. For my money, this is one of the, if not the most worthwhile expenditure of tax dollars. Their primary mission has and will always be search and rescue, albeit now with resources greatly spread over other responsibilities. Their equipment and people do require experience and training. If you ever find yourself in danger, they will quickly become your hero. The CG can board any vessel in US waters, regardless of flag or registration and they clealy have police powers on the water for obvious reasons

Always

The USCG has always had "ticketing" authority within my life time. Thier other mission priority is boating safty and thus they can board and site boaters that are not meeting Federal standards. This is basic safty and sanitation stuff. To most sailors this is a no brainier but you'd be surprised at the number of Clewless boater. Having been a USCGR Boarding office for 8 years. Folks this is a good thing...let's save lives and property before the problem rather than the typical after the fact.

If You are US Flaged They can Board You Anywhere

I would think one would be happy to see them out there making sure all of the other guys have all of their safety equipment. A good way to minimise the likelyhood of being stopped is to have a Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron Vessel Safety Check sticker on your boat.

USCG - 'Safety Inspections'

Since these guys saved my and my crews life once, and were gentlemen the entire incident, I have tremendous respect and admiration for their courage and ability. The ones I have talked to would rather do their duty, rescue, bouy tending, inspections, and assists rather than drug enforcement, unless incidental to their main jobs. The 'safety inspections' are that and for other reasons too, but it has zero effect to have a yellow sheet in hand, they will carry on with an additional inspection regardless, they do it with manners though. North of S.F. bay is where they train many recruits and are in the habit of making many safety inspections. Enter Brookings harbor (Oregon), great place lined with log-cabin sized boulders and rocks on either side of the fairway on the range, they will inspect you there; local commondant is bucking fer admiral methinks...;-)

This discussion again?

I guess it will surface every six months or so. Re: being boarded. Haven't yet and waiting for the day they do. I will be 100% cooperative. I've been watched twice from one of the their CH53 helicopters and the Navy Seals in the boats have motored aside me, but haven't been stopped. When the Seals motor by, I always render proper courteously.

Yes, Proper!

Road Tool, the fact that you and your children are not required to speak Japanese as your first language, is just one of the many things the U.S. Navy has done for you. Perhaps your just having a bad day, or I misunderstood your reply. fair winds Dave

How quickly we forget that the USCG....

saved 35,000 yes 35,000 lives during Katrina in N.O. They were they only organization (since they are part of the military) that could have done that. So, next time you are in the coast and something really bad happens...hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, be thankfull for the USCG. I have been boarded 2 times in the last 2 years. I find it fun since I know I am in compliance. They are always professional. The third time they were going to board they decided not to because I had been boarded just a few months before and showed the paperwork to prove it. I asked them if they wanted to practice they could, but they left me alone. Thank you Navy, Airforce, Marines, Reserves, National Guards, and Coast Guard for keeping us safe. abe

Security In San Diego Harbor

While in the USCG my nephew was trained and participated in boardings on the West Coast. I know of no one more concerned about the welfare of boaters and security issues than he is. This week I heard on Channel-16 a USCG patrol at entrance of San Diego Harbor who were apparently hailing every private yacht approaching from Mexico. They asked questions and once satisfied with the answers they were courteously thanked for their cooperation and told to proceed. About two years ago I know a large powerboat decided to take a close look at a submarine inside SD Bay. A nearby Navy security boat told him he was in restricted waters but was ignored. Security fired their machine gun into the water near the powerboat bow. This received immediate response and compliance. I was surprised the newspapers never picked up on this as we don't often hear of security firing at violators inside US harbors. I applaud the work of USCG and Navy in local waters to insure we never have another USS COLE incident.

Coast Guard is now under Homeland security

so they are out there controlling our sea borders. out of Miami and the Keys they patrol for illegal Cubans; out of San Juan they patrol for illegal Domominicans and Haitians and I guess out of San Diego they would search for illegal Mexicans. There has never been to much worry about Canadians but it is a border access that can be used by other nationalities. There is also patrolling for contraband and drugs. The new recruits need training and they get it by patrolling recreational coastal US waters in the weekends. It helps boat safety and keeps some of the drunks away from the controls. For the services they provide I gladly pay my tax dollars. Katrina was just an example.

Times Change

I have been boarded several times. Heck, even have the safety checklist down...Up here in The Pacific Northwest, the Canadian border is near so the presence of Coast Guard folks is notably increased since 9/11. Initially they kept us safe from invasion from another country. after that, our USCG was busy keeping us safe from ourselves. Now the priority has changed to keeping us safe from terrorists. Things change, yet they stay the same. After all, they still keep us safe...
