Hi, I have just finished reading the archive discussions about Coast Guard Documentation. I recently recieved Documentation for my Catalina 36 MKII. My question is simple. Does the NO that proceeds the number have a period after it such as NO.2222222 as the reg shows it ( " NO." ) or is it just NO2222222?

The number is the numeric one for ID purposes. Are you talking about the number engraving (marking) into the boat structure? If so, here is their rule: "The official number assigned to documented vessels, preceded of the abbreviation "NO." must be marked in block-type Arabic numerals at least three inches high on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull. The number must be permanently affixed so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious and cause some scarring or damage to the surrounding hull area." Rick D.

If you are asking what to put on the boat,
mine just has the numerals and I think that is proper. I just read Ricks post and mine might be wrong but it is just numbers without a "NO." preceeding them. Maybe I need to redo it. What say you, Rick?

My Boat Registration...
...in RI (Documentation Registration it is called) is printed on the certificate with only the 6 digits. Inside the boat, it is only the digits, also.

And, to answer ypur question.....
... all of the doc numbers I have seen have a period after the "NO". Mine does because it is easy to do, and if it is not an "official" rquirement..... no big deal. I have been told, without first hand knowledge, that the period is required. reality check.... do you think they would actually say anything if the period was missing ? Jeff

I was borded and check by the Coast Guard last year and they said and noted nothing about the lack of "No." preceding my doc number.

Where and How did you affix the ID
I received my Doc ID, too. What tool/material did you use to meet the criteria ? "The number must be permanently affixed so that alteration, removal, or replacement would be obvious and cause some scarring or damage to the surrounding hull area." My dealer said, don't woory about it, just keep a copy of the document aboard. Now I'm worried.

For the annual checks the CG Aux. has
been pretty forgiving, PO glassed the number on the inside of the hull under forepeak (where the transducers are). Using registration numbers and covering with a layer of glass, technically letters are 1" short. I purchased engraved wooden plaque with numbers available from several places. Screwed & glued to bulkhead readily visiable from companionway. I'll include a some links such vendors here. http://www.sempersigns.com/numbers.html http://www.americanwoodsign.com/boatsigns.html

I vote: Use the No. it is the requirement.
I have looked at a lot of boats and have never seen a boat without it! We had a stencil made and painted the No. and numbers into the hull liner.

They probably won't arrest you, but who knows?
In the 'old days' the rule said that the number had to be carved into the main-beam. Remember those? Anyway, in keeping with tradition and wanting to 'look the look', I carved our number into the compression post beam, including the NO. (with the dot) That part of the number can't be seen in this picture. The 'look' I was after would best be described as rustic. I used a carving knife set and just gouged out the wood between the outline of the numbers. Also note that the board that they are carved on, is removable and replaceable. Once the plugs are in and the screw holes are less prevalent, it passes muster. (Hey, that's another 'tradition word')
And I'm still trying to upload the picture. This seems the be a crazy day.

OK, I remembered wrong ...
Was on my boat here in Newport today and it does have NO It's the other boat in Naples that doesn't have NO. I guess I will mark it in with paint next winter. Vic
