Coaming Winches

What diameter base will the current coaming winches accept? I believe the originals are Lewmar 8s, at 4 1/4 inches. I won't be out to the boat for a while, so anyone who knows just what size diameter winch I can use on a 1975 Vega (is that series II?), I will be very much appreciative!

Thanks,

Jack

I've got a series II and I've got Harken 16 self tailing winches. I think Harken 32's will fit as well (but am not sure).

Our Series 2 has Andersen 16s fitted and they fit the flattened areas of the coamimgs bases quite nicely, though obviously I did have to plug the original holes and re-drill.
If you're contemplating something bigger than 16s, I have a friend who fitted some Barton 40s to his Elizabethan (he got offered them for free): - he had a circular steel plate (about 6mm thick) cut to the diameter of the new winch bases which was drilled to match the original fixing holes and those in the new winches, the plate was bolted with spacers to the boat, then the winches bolted to the plate; whilst these new winches sit perhaps 12mm above the coaming, he's had no problems with them.
