Any suggestions on how to remove black soot deposit on my ladder area from the exhaust. Next, how to remove coal tar from a piling that has stained the rubber rub rail

If GoJo doesn't work

If the GoJo doesn't work, you might try a Magic Erasure. There isn't much a Magic Erasure won't get off.

Let us know if the GoJo works.......

I've never tried it myself. The bad news is I got some of same cal tar on a white Taylor fender a few years ago. The best I could do was to remove the sticky stuff but I was left with a yellow stain. I used acetone; it was very labor intensive; the results were not satisfactory; and I ended up tossing the fender a few years later. I suspect your rub rail is made of similar vinyl material. I hope I'm wrong... As for the soot stain, Aurora 'Boat Scrub' and 'Boat Clean' work better than anything else I've tried. I can't remember which of the two- Boat Scrub or boat Clean works better on soot stains. These are Canadian products and difficult to find.

Rub Rail

We have very old pilings at the marina where I dock my boat. They actually replaced two pf the oldest pilings with new presure treated lumber and they are a joy. Of course you never want to hit anything while leaving or returning, but the fact is sometimes you can't avoid this. The older pilings are covered with creosote or tar and I have never found anything that removes the stains.I have tried auromotibe bug and tar removers, Fantastik, various vinyl cleaners, Spray Nine, Simple Green The best thing is actually a Brillo Pad. The reason I pay Catalina $123.00 every two years is to replace my grey vinyl insert. I can't stand to see the brown marks streaked across the Rub Rails as they make an otherwise clean boat look dirty. The replacement is an easy job, just let the vinyl heat up in the warm sun or use a hair dryer or heat gun set on low to make the job a little easier. My season starys in a month or two, if anyone has a miracle cleaner out there please let us know.

Not sure about cleaning....

but try this on your piling to prevent getting the coal tar on your rub rail again once it is cleaned. Good luck

collinite

Collinite cleaner will remove the black soot easily. As for the coal tar, I am not sure how well it will work. Try it.
