CO Detector

What would cause the CO detector in the Hunter 426 to go off all the time. When the boat is opened up, it stops, but close it for any length of time (meaning a few hours today) it would go off again. The boat is in the slip. Engine has not been on over a week. The battery charger was not on this morning when the alarm first sounded, but has been on subsequently. Baffled in Huron

Me too!

Earlier this year, I have my CO detector go off while the boat was closed up with a battery charger running. Will a build up of Hydrogen set off a CO detector? Is charging a battery in a closed boat dangerous? Chris

I guess they are pretty sensitive.

Ours goes off everytime around 5:00 AM when we spend a night at anchor running the genset. Sometimes it will go off even when using shore power. I guess CO residues combined with poor air circulation may trigger the sensor. I think I'm going to move ours next the companionway where there is better circulation to see if it does better. Hate to be without the protection but it can be a nuisance.

co detectors don't last forever!

co detectors on a boat only have a 3-5 year life-the sensors accumulate residual fumes, corrosion, etc and then they start alarming randomly. low battery voltage can also set them off. we had all three sensors on our 4 year old 356 fail within one week, the only fix is to replace them

Battery Gassing?

Ours used to go off a lot, I replaced it and it still went off a lot. I changed the wet batteries (which were below the unit under the floor) to AGMs and the problem went away. The battery gassing sets it off. Bill

There are a variety of substances other than CO...

that will set them off. As mentioned, hydrogen from wet cell charging will do it, and also some general purpose cleaners. I seem to remember that this was discussed a while ago, try searching the archives. I have a 6-7 year old CO unit that is still working properly, so the lifetime of these units may vary.
